The Unexpected Decline of the Rolex ‘Sprite’ GMT + Why it’s Worth Collecting?

A Discussion around the Rolex "Sprite" Destro 126720VTNR GMT. Is it soon to be Discontinued and why is it worth Collecting? This may very well be one of the most collectable modern sports Rolex's going into the future for all the reasons why most people dislike it. The left-hand case is polarising, the flipped date window is jarring. Considering that this watch will have a short production run and uses a signature green as a part of its makeup, adds to the look and presentation of this oddity. Picasso would be proud!

What are your thoughts on Rolex's Destro GMT now that the dust has settled? 🥃
I have a gut feeling that this model that will have a 3-5 year lifespan before either converting to a more safer design 7:00 or disappearing completely.

They're still trading 30% above retail and unavailable at retail, so it's not like they're unwanted by any measure.

If the recently discontinued Milgauss with the "odd" lightning bolt seconds hand, beautiful Z-dial and "Super-odd" green cristal cannot elicit passion among collectors, nothing odd will. So conventional and familiar, yet rare, is the formula for Rolex collectibility.

I'm left-handed.... And after 2.5 years on the wait list... I got the call and picked mine up a month ago.
It's a beautiful thing and I love it.... I have worn it since but I am conscious of it and people noticing it when I'm out and about. Have insured it.... But has made me more aware of my I don't with other watches.

I love the Sprite. Love the difference as I am a lefty and wear my watch on my right hand. Also, love the combination of green and black bezel. It will also be fun to rotate with my other watch.

I own and love this watch, was fortunate enough to get it from my AD. Agree in the next 5-10 years it will be a highly collectible watch. I wear my watches for the love of horology. If it appreciates in value, fantastic. Either way, it will be a fun timepiece to give to my son as I think my collection.

I reached out to my AD as soon as the sprite was released in March 2022. I’m still waiting for it. Love how odd and rare it’s is.

I found this watch earlier in the year and decided i wanted one. So in late May I went to an AD in my area and they let me try one on, I gave them my name and said I preferred the Jubilee bracelet. I am left handed, I have worn my watch on my wright writs for many years. I did not know there was a left oriented watch. I have for years been thinking I wanted a gmt. So the AD reached out to me at the end of July and offered me the watch. Now I have been wearing it daily for more than two months. It is perfect for me, the left side date window is ideal. I constantly reference the present date as well as past and or future dates at work so I need a date. I also need to reference different times zones including conversion to 24 hour time. So after two months I have been more than pleased with this watch. It helps that the Green recalls the green used both by my father in his trade as well as in the color family my company uses. As such I am quite in love with this watch.

Cracking upload.
Smart take. Rolex need this in the catalogue post Milgauss and it's a quirky that speaks louder to me than bubbles and jigsaws do.
I'd love to see your take on some possible future releases in this vein IDGuy.
Cheers and enjoy the weekend.

I really liked your take on this, but I can’t say I fully agree. I think you focused on the drop in price more than where the watch has settled on grey market. The watch came out at the end of the watch boom which only leads to the downturn, mix that in with the historic sky rocket in price of every new model as the first few get to AD’s, followed by a significant drop over the next year, I think it fits right in line with all the others, just behind the Pepsi. Had the same trajectory as the new Panda, which I don’t think anyone would say has been forgotten about. Just landed higher so far

This watch is extremely difficult to get, no matter if you are Rolex costumer or not.
I said before and I am saying again, price will be over 20k in 24 hours when they announce end of production.
Not so many of this GMT are around.
Maximum 2-3 years and the watch is OUT from catalogue.

Dear Mr IDGuy, always appreciate you digging in like you do.
I don’t get any warm fuzzy feeling about this watch, even when you changed the date window.
Won’t be fighting anyone for it 😅
I’m all about quirky, have the previous Airking.
I’ve never had FOMO over the VTNR personally. Hulk yes.
Milgauss yes.
Love your Tudor, looks great, you wear it well. ☺️

I’m right and wear my watches on the left wrist. Last year I got a Sinn EZM 3 with the crown on the left. felt really weird on the pics but I tried it on and and the crown on the left felt surprisingly natural.
So I’d say to those who like it-try it on and it might surprise you ;)
