Super underrated run. The panels are rushed here and there and maybe some chapters look too 'editor-interfered', but the ideas are super meticulous and amazing. I think in this run Morrison meta-narratively lays down his ideas on the skill of storytelling and how simple archetypal concepts can still be renewed with creativity and formal experimentation. The Trickster God Mxy might be a stand-in for both the author (that he created Superman's reality on the writer's behalf) and the hero. In one of his interviews, GM mentions recognizing the allusion between Superman's journey from Krypton and the Mahabharata anti-hero Karna, and I wonder if Mxy was supposed to play the role of Krishna within this story. Morrison did go on to write 18 days which is based on Mahabharata, which prominently features Krishna in a similar 'Trickster/too powerful for the conflict' archetype.

Great overview. I have this run and I think you dig it or you don’t. I do but some of Morrisons work can be odd to say the least. Keep up the awesome work

Thanks for doing this! I have both versions. I love the first half - the stories and art had a dynamic quality that I think rivals some the best that the new 52 had to offer. I agree the second half becomes dense and at time incomprehensible, the overall quality of story and art is well above average.

Hey Mike! Great job on the overview here coordinated between Matt & yourself! U guys always do a really good job on these vids! I read the 1st 3 HC volumes of the New 52 Action Comics, & I liked it, overall. I couldn't afford to continue w/all the titles I wanted to, including this one(I know, I'm one of a seemingly small group of New 52 fans, lol). And eventually cut ties w/all DC comics. Marvel too, for that matter... unless they were stand-alone stories, graphic novels(like the Earth One HCs), etc, that didn't require reading other books to understand what was going on. My favorite title to come out of the New 52 was "Batman" by Snyder & Capullo(which even fans who strongly disliked the New 52, mostly agreed was an excellent run! To me, it's my favorite Bats ever- particularly the "Court of Owls"/"City of Owls" story, the "Joker: Death of the Family" story, & the "Zero Year" 2-volume story!). Back to Supes, though. I enjoyed the 1st volume of this run the most. I really liked Morrison's retelling of Clark's becoming Supes! Some of it started to become a bit confusing- as u stated does happen sometimes w/Morrison, lol... but on the whole, what I read of his run was fun & imaginative. I doubt I will buy this omni, as I have too many other books at the top of my list- like the 1st Dlx HC Ed. of "Gideon Falls, " for starters! But I will always have fond memories of this run- particularly, as I said above, the 1st collected HC that shows how Clark becomes Superman! The Superman book I wanna read most is the one I got my big brother for his birthday last yr- which was Snyder & Lee's epic-looking, monster OHC, "Superman Unchained Dlx Ed!" Have u or Matt read that one? If so, what are your thoughts? Thanx for another great video, guys! Hope u guys & your fams are feeling well & staying safe!😊👍🏻👍🏻❤

The original print had a page where the speech bubbles had no text. They also missed Sholly Fisch's name off the front and spelt it incorrectly in the credits.

For me this is a hard pass especially with lack of extras It is probably good that All Star Superman was not included with this as that was a quintillion times better than the Superman 52. Best bets are to go with the Absolute edition of All Star Superman or the Deluxe All Star Superman coming out next year. I'm fine with the standard size hard cover reprints for this run that I found with pretty steep discounts at Ollies Bargain Outlets.

This will go nicely with Superman and the Authority because you can never have too much Grant Morrison Superman, they are so good at writing Superman

I’m a big Morrison fan as well but just couldn’t get into this run. Although All-Star Superman is one of my all-time favourite stories. I guess I’m just too much of fan of the “real” Clark Kent/Kal-El and not this version.
