It's all design, from IT projects to The Rosie Project: Graeme Simsion at TEDxUniMelb

Graeme Simsion graduated in Physics from Monash University and worked his way through several IT roles before specialising in data modelling and founding a business and IT consultancy. He grew Simsion Bowles and Associates to some sixty staff across Australia before selling in 1999. During this time he wrote Data Modeling Essentials and completed graduate qualifications in business and IT. After completing a PhD in 2006, he enrolled in screenwriting and professional writing courses. His novel The Rosie Project won the 2012 Premier's Award for an Unpublished Manuscript and is now an international bestseller. The screenplay won the AWG / Inception Award in 2010 and has been optioned to Sony Pictures. Graeme's story is one of how generalised design principles informed the development of an award-winning screenplay and, in the process, a best-selling novel. More broadly, it is a case study of the value of cross-disciplinary thinking and a call to recruit thinkers from a wider range of disciplines to address our most pressing challenges.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. He's delightful. I just finished reading The Rosie Project and was laughing because the first thing I said about it when someone asked was "it's formulaic." Not that I didn't like it, it's a great story told well. But I've watched a million old movies so I'm not surprised his design theory of screenwriting works well. Also Netflix genre algorithms reveal such a system. Hats off, Mr. Simsion.

Graeme Simsion is like Don Tillman: creative, intelligent and really interesting. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ But I imagine that he hasn't social problems like his character.
