In the autoimmune disorder Multiple Sclerosis, immune cells like macrophages mistakenly react to and start eating myelin, an essential fat-like material that ensheaths nerves in the brain. This video depicts 2 human macrophages in culture moments after adding fragmented myelin, with a purple dye staining the myelin and cell membranes and a green dye staining structures inside the cells. At the very beginning at the bottom right one cell consumes, a ball of myelin floating by, after which it is slowly brought towards the cell's center as its digested.
