Eric Clapton Martin 000-28EC Review

I have a '96 EC I got new from Mandolin Brothers. The top has aged into a honey gold color and the sound is amazing, This is a golden age for guitars and in the future these will be as sought after as the pre-war Martins.

My local Sam Ash recently got a large inventory of high end Martins, needless to say I've been visiting a lot more, and this guitar is what has stood out to me as the best playing.

imho I wish Martin would stop pushing this "vintage toner" on their guitars.  I love Martin but part of the joy of buying a new guitar and watching it age is the toner slowly getting darker as it gets older.. Buying these guitars that suppose to look old is like folks buying jeans with holes in them to be fake hippies. It doesn't take that long for guitars to age and get darker. I have a 2008 D-35 and it is already turning a nice shade of orange. They should at least give the buyer an option for either standard or vintage toner on models that they like to paint orange lol.

I have one of these made in 2000 it sounds fantastic and is a dream to play, I even prefer it to my d-35 but I love that too

I had one of these in college that I loved to death #1, 929 - It was my pride and joy. Had to sell after years, and was heartbroken. Just picked up another new one (SN over #22, 000!) 

To me, this is the definitive Martin. forget the signature. The specs are perfect. 000 size, 1 3/4" nut width, gorgeous spruce tops (most of the 000-28ECs have beautiful silk and perfect grain), RW back/sides, scalloped bracing but the rear position. Big sound when you strum, sweet and responsive for the quiet stuff. 

Total dream guitar.

EDIT: One difference I have seen in more recent models is less consistency in the ebony. If you like that totally smooth, pure black look - then yu may want to look through a few samples before you buy.

That's a fine-sounding guitar. I once ordered on new on line. It had high action and had poor tone. I returned it immediately. I then visited three Martin dealers and found a new 2014 000-18 that sounded great and had nice, low action. When the guitar tech saw me playing it, he said. "That's the best guitar in the store. I love it." Nearly six years later, it has opened up beautifully and sounds so great. It's inspiring to play. The moral of the story is, if possible, play before you buy. Sometimes even a great company will put out a stinker.
