Agreed .. because you can't run away from the problem when it's in you.

When we're the problem, it doesn't matter where we go, it will end in disaster. We have to fix ourselves, first and foremost.

It’s unrealistic _for now._

The issue with this logic — which is otherwise entirely fine, and I actually agree with the principle of it — is that we should really have a safety net like this *_in case_* our efforts fail.

It _is_ less effort to try and prevent any disaster that comes our way, sure… But assuming our efforts will have no chance of failure is a hubris I’d rather not take on.

The “eggs in one basket” analogy only makes sense so many centuries in the future

There's a saying that goes "wherever you go, there you are."

The problem is that sometimes problems have deadlines, two planets allow missing one deadline and humans still existing.

In other words, it's cheaper and easier to defend and repair the house you already live in than it is to pack up and move to a new one.

He’s ignoring the possibility of us killing each other, which no amount of work can stop

I don't actually think he meant it in a way of escaping to Mars from a catastrophe on Earth, but rather being on Mars and Earth in case something happens that makes one of the planets uninhabitable. Just like if, hypothetically, something would happen that makes an entire continent uninhabitable, we'd still have other continents to live on.

Nothing will ever be fixed as long as someone's losing money.

Not to mention: Terraforming, in its very nature, takes centuries. Just the amount of atmosphere you'd need to dump onto Mars to make it livable would be so massive, if you dumped it all at once, Mars would look more like Venus in terms of temperature. And that is BEFORE considering water.

First thing we have to do...to progress in any way.... We must begin to cooperate with each other, think of a larger picture than ourself... Kind of sad, it is such a simple answer.

"If you have the power to terraform mars you have the power to terraform earth back into earth." Is one of if not the best quote ive heard. Its so simple, yet so easy to miss

Just because it takes more effort doesn't make it unrealistic.

If Earth is wiped out, I don't see the value of having our species continue in harsh environments. I prefer the idea that our species no longer suffers. I doubt it's a popular opinion but it's my opinion.
