Please be mindful that we will pause (we prefer to react in the moment & to avoid copyright strike), we will react with enthusiasm, smiles, tears, conversation, exchanged looks and air-instruments. Listen also to Salty dog from a consert in Denmark in 2006. Forty years later Gary's voice is even better.

As far as the meaning of the song - People have tried to interpret the lyrics for 50 years. As with a lot of good poetry, it can seen in different ways. The most common view is that it is written from the point of view of a sailor (or pirate) who has died at sea....telling the story of how they perished. (A salty dog is an old english term for "an old seaman".) So yes, you got the tone correctly...definitely sad. (If you watch the live version from my previous comment, you'll be amazed at how amazing Brooker's voice still was...almost 40 years after the original recording.)

The live version of this, Homburg and A Whiter Shade of Pale in Denmark in 2006 are jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

This and Conquistador from the live in Edmonton are breathtaking. There’s a full symphony and choir. Whaling Stories is also on there and it makes you feel you are on that ship hunting Whales.

You guys should hear the 1971 Live with Edmonton Symphony Orchestra version of the song. It was the best version for me. It has a tad faster tempo, livelier acoustics and grander outro..

Gary Brooker's voice is truly a brilliant, golden instrument all its own. He does subtle and epic equally well.

Complimenti. Gli unici che ascoltano il brano e poi ne discutono senza inutili, irritanti pause. Well done. 👍👍👍🥰🥰

Such a sad, gorgeous song! Keith Reid the lyricist was brilliant and in this song he wasn't just talking about sailing ships! Another great Procol Harum song (among many) is Homburg. r.i.p Gary Brooker, your voice will be missed. Keep up the great channel you two!
