Cluster of Daddy Longlegs (Harvestmen) - Ajijic, Mexico

Показать описание
Daddy Longlegs, also known as Harvestmen, are arachnids in the order Opiliones. While they are arachnids, they are not spiders. Unlike spiders, Daddy Longlegs do not have separate abdomens; and they only have two eyes, whereas spiders have three to four pairs. Contrary to some popular myths, Daddy Longlegs are not venomous. They can't be, since they don't have venom glands. They also have no silk glands, and so are unable to spin webs.

This clustering behavior provides the Daddy Longlegs with warmth and protection from predators.

Video from Ajijic, Mexico, near Lake Chapala.

I like how when you touch one, he gets out touches others, and so they spread out.

I believe I genuinely have arachnophobia, as I have actual uncontrollable, hysterical fits over spiders, but Harvestmen have never bothered me. I can pick them up with no issues, and I let them be. We have outdoor cats and feed them dry cat food, and in the Summer you sometimes see these things grab a piece and carry it away. They are not scary nor disgusting at all; they are just tiny basketballs with legs and tiny little feet that look like an L, and they are looking for snacks to carry home and munch on, bless their hearts.

Imagine stepping on what you think is a pile of twigs, expecting that satisfying crunch, but instead, the pile of twigs wraps around your legs.

That poor bald man who wakes up one morning thinking: "Hmm.. I didn't have hair yesterday.."

This is absolutely horrifying yet somehow oddly endearing.

This is going to sound weird to say, but I love Harvestmen. We had a pantry moth problem in our house last year, within a few weeks a bunch of Harvestmen started popping up around our house, and they started eating all the pantry moths! Saved me from having to call pest control, so I owe them one lol.

Imagine if you were at a music festival, in a crowd of 50, 000 people, then a giant stick emerged from the sky and everyone started running for cover.

After hearing they’re harmless, i for some reason developed the urge to walk up to one of these clusters and lightly press my entire hand on it.

It’s kinda cute how they’re basically just having a giant cuddle party

I used to see this happen on the ledge behind my parent’s house when I was a kid. They have a fascinating defense mechanism when in a colony cluster. If you were to threaten it, the colony contorts itself into the shape of a person and starts punching you.
