Blue Shell: The BEST Mario Power-Up!

This power up was the JAM in Mario Vs. Luigi mode. Speaking of, there's a mode that should've stuck around. So much fun.

The saddest part is that many levels weren't made for the blue shell.
It's one of my favorite powerups but it hasn't returned since nsmb which is a shame.

A few notes about the *incredible might of the Blue Shell* that ZoomZike didn't mention:
- The shell gives you increased speed and maneuverability in water, similar to the frog suit in Mario 3.
- You are invulnerable to _most_ things while shell spinning, with a few exceptions. You can also gain this invulnerability by simple pressing down on the d-pad and ducking into the shell, working sort of like a tanuki suit's statue transformation but considerably quicker to start up and with no time limit.
- The blue shell allows you to defeat some enemies that are only typically killable with a super star, such as Thwomps for example.
- The blue shell allows access to some normally unreachable secret areas due to its ability to break brick blocks that are horizontal to Mario, similar to the tanuki suit's tail swipe.
In conclusion, on top of the fun control scheme change highlighted in this video, the blue shell is practically a combination of aspects of the tanuki suit, frog suit, and super star, all without being game-breakingly powerful or bypassing the game's level design with flight, making it *objectively the best powerup in the entire Mario Series.*

Technically the blue shell also appeared in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. It functioned in a different way but it was clearly inspired from the NSMB blue shell. Mario wears it as well and can be launched with Luigi's hammer. Sorry for bringing that up. Great video otherwise.

We came *this* close to having a “blue shell” type power up in Super Mario Maker 2 as part of the 3D World mode! OG 3D World had you slide inside a shell if you are carrying one while running (maybe crouching if you are at full speed)! While not very practical there, that would’ve been a beautiful mechanic to bring into Mario Maker! Unfortunately, they decided to use a car which I would argue is not as flexible as something akin to the Blue Shell!

There's a level in SMW that's designed to be skipped with the Cape so you can do a clutch dive under where the normal goalpost is to obtain the secret exit. So Nintendo KNEW exactly how busted the Cape was when they made it. And yeah, it sucks that the Shell has never returned. Considering what they did to Yoshi, it'd be cool if you could get different colored shells to gain special traits.

It was so rare to get too :( if i remember correctly you could only get it from one of those flying blocks that would move around on the world map, and then there was only a chance it was the blue shell

I feel like this power-up and the big mushroom deserve a spot in one of the next Mario games. Not only because NSMB was the only game they were in, but also because they brought certain feels to the game.

For example, whenever you would get the big mushroom or the shell you would feel powerful because of the properties the power-ups had.

I remember playing multiplayer on this game and really pissing my friends off with this power up, just position yourself between somethings (like the small trench on one of the multiplayer maps) and watch luigi fly.

DUDE!!! This Super Mario game for the DS was my childhood 😊 and it was my introduction to the entire franchise. So sad that Nintendo has forgotten about the blue shell power up, it was always my favourite one in that game.
