My husband was weed eating on a job & hit a ground hornet's nest. He started running & probably a dozen hornets flew after him stinging him on the back & neck. Ended up taking him to the hospital where he stayed for 3 hours. They were afraid of anaphylactic shock & gave him Epinephrine to counteract that. Hornets are nothing to mess with.

I used to work at a resort in the rainforest in Northern Queensland Australia and they have nests there in the trees or the rainforest undergrowth that are similar. The ones there are made by thousands of little green ants, called a Green Ants Nest. I've seen some about the size of a basketball or a soccer ball.
The ants actually bring the leaves of the branches around together to form a ball shape, while the leaves are still attached to the branch, they use their saliva to sow or join the leaves together, forming a huge ball.
I actually touched one with a stick and within seconds the whole nest was covered in green ants.
And YES they do tend to become very nasty if you accidentally brush up against one, stinging or biting the hell out of you if they get onto you.
It's bloody amazing how such a small creature or insect such as a wasp, a hornet or even an ant can make a huge nest such as this.

It's not an active nest, otherwise he would've been swarmed almost immediately

Hornets scare the hell out of me but you have to be in awe of nature when it can create a home like that.

We should always leave that empty nest there because other Hornets won't make anest if they see that big nest already there

As a ten year old we were playing hide and seek around a farm yard ..what i thought was a cardboard box in a barn wasn’t .. i was chased by hornets and suffered multiple stings.. i was in intensive care for many days as the swelling had shut my air supply off.. an off duty nurse performed a tracheotomy without surgical tools, she saved my life back then with a potato peeler from the farms kitchen.. it was 1982..
