I was born in the late 60’s in the Caribbean where it was mandatory to receive vaccines against Polio, Mumps, chicken-pox, Rubella, before age 5 and definitely before the end of kindergarten. I used to believe that I would never hear about Polio again in my lifetime. So sad I was mistaken😢😩

My Dad had polio in the 20’s when he was 2. He walked with brace and cane. My brothers, sister and I got vaccinated Right away. If there is a booster needed I am there. I know what happens.

Polio vaccinations are required in many countries. You can't attend school in many countries if you aren't vaccinated against polio. It's crazy this vaccine might be optional in America.

Herd immunity is lower because not a lot of people are vaccinating against polio. If only they understood how herd immunity works, they would vaccinate to protect themselves and others. Polio was eradicated due to mandatory vaccinations back in the day, and U.S. was able to built herd immunity compared to third world countries, but as time went by, people thought they were invincible so some people stopped vaccinating. This is the result of that. I’m honestly not surprised by this at all 🤷‍♀️

It would have been better reporting here if they told us how to know whether we'd gotten the vaccine as kids. Like, in the US, it was required for all school children...but didn't it stop after a certain year because it was no longer an issue? And what if you immigrated to the US?

I learned from a travel clinic that the vaccine we all got as children only lasts around 20 years. You need to get the vaccine again as an adult if you are traveling to an area where it is prevalent.

You'd think any parent would vaccinate their kids for polio but I guess I was wrong. These people should just watch YouTube videos about kids with polio, those who remained crippled or worse, like those who for all of their lives had to sleep in iron lungs (a few old people are still alive).
