RULES:
The object of the game is to be the first player to get your piece to the finish 100 space. This game can be played by 2 or more players.

Setup. Layout the board and each player picks a piece. Each player rolls the die and the player with the highest number goes first, then play proceeds clockwise. On your turn, roll the die and move your piece that many spaces. Pieces start at the 1 space then move from left to right and right to left along the board, following the sequence of numbers towards 100.

When you land at the bottom of a ladder, you immediately move your piece to the space at the top of the ladder. When you land on a space at the top of a snake, your piece will move down to the space at the bottom of the snake. If you land on a space at the bottom of a snake or the top of a ladder, then nothing happens.

The first player to reach the highest space on the board, the number one hundred, wins the game. To win, however, you will need to roll the exact number to get you to the last space. If your roll is too high, then you remain where you are.

thank you for this video - I prefer for all of us to see/hear the instructions so there are no arguments on the rules! Love this!

As a kid, I had a variant of this called "Chutes and Ladders" where the snakes were replaced with slides. It was kid-oriented and designed to teach good behavior--the ladders were accompanied with pictures of kids behaving well and getting rewarded, while the "chutes" had pictures of kids behaving badly and getting punished. It was a long time before I learned that my version was a variant.

First, I thought that you FINALLY did this CLASSIC game... but then I saw on my recommended a chutes & ladders video by you.

"(at the end) If your roll is too high, then you remain where you are"
Ah... we always did the backward move (which can lead to the snake head if you're unlucky enough).

Saw this game in the 1957 Dana Andrews movie Curse of the Demon

In Malaysia, the rule is almost the same except when your roll exceeded 100, you will still move however you will move backwards according to excess value.

For example, if my position is 99 and I rolled a 5 then the value will be 104. Then from 100, I move back 4 spaces, resulting in 96.

Some people play a rule where if you roll a 6, you go again (I didn't) but one I did play was that if you rolled a number that took you beyond 100, you'd go forward to 100, then back the remaining number of squares. For example, if you were on square 98 and rolled a 5, you'd move 2 squares forward, and 3 squares back to make 5

You can use this game to understand common law. You have a pile of cards with the snake icon on top of them, with the wrong answer written underneath and another pile of cards with the ladder icon on top, with the correct answer on the other side.

I also heard that if you roll a 6, you get an extra turn. But what happens if you land on a square occupied by another player? Does that player’s piece get bumped back to start just like in Trouble?

Hmm. I played Slides and Ladders in my childhood. I remember if you didnt get the exact number to reach 100, you can move ur token then move backwards. And in the event 2 tokens are in the same number, if it’s ur turn, you have to take the other token with you. Dunno. 😅😁
