Elvin Jones Magnificent Drum Solo

Check out Elvin Jones shedding at about 72 years old. To me, he got better and better. He's always been the "different drummer". But I feel his style kept becoming more and more refined, like a fine wine. But POWERFUL, crispy, and clean. Definitely one of the best post-bob drummers of all time. Enjoy!

It is a force of nature, a message of the gods. Just unique, pure expression of sound painting… he is a painter!

So much more melodic, musical, and interesting than today’s chop fests

One of a kind! I saw him live at around this point of his life and his drumming was astonishing!

I was fortunate enough to see him at Detroit's very intimate Baker's Keyboard Lounge in the mid 70's. Blew me away.

Is that all you got? 😀 Those hands are amazing, feet too. Drums sounded fantastic too. Simply awesome.

Master of all masters - miles of space between each note and each phrase - the solo breathes

Super talented drummer . A Master of his craft. Musical fluid awesome
phrasing and usage of silence & space. Nobody does that today.
The voice of Mother Africa.

flabbergasting! ...even adjusting the mic of the first tom....

So much relativity and switching of subdivision out of nowhere, that mixing of assimilated rhythm over time, yo. Just that sense being developed❤

I'm a drummer too and Elvin is one of my drum heroes!

Michael Shriver's solo in Santana's "Soul Sacrifice" at Woodstock brought me here. I can see the influence Jones had on him.

If anyone can point me to a track of Elvin playing a musical-sounding solo, I would love to hear it. I’m still (after 40 years playing and listening to great drummers) trying to understand why anyone thinks this is inspirational.

I love what Jones did in the 60-70s great bee bop, but the solo just nowhere near great or good modern drummers put down.

A drum solo without any background music or bass line is always noise. Change my mind
