The Widely Unknown Story of the Nazi Resistance Group “Weiße Rose” | Feli from Germany

Have you ever heard of Sophie & Hans Scholl, Alexander Schmorell, Willi Graf, Christoph Probst, or Kurt Huber? They were part of the non-violent Nazi resistance group "Weiße Rose" (White Rose) in Munich. In the 1940s, they printed thousands of leaflets to call for passive resistance among the German population and risked their lives for what they believed in.

ABOUT ME: Hallo, Servus, and welcome to my channel! My name is Felicia (Feli), I'm 30 years old, and I'm a German living in the USA! I was born and raised in Munich, Germany but have been living in Cincinnati, Ohio off and on since 2016. I first came here for an exchange semester during my undergrad at LMU Munich, then I returned for an internship, and then I got my master's degree in Cincinnati. I was lucky enough to win the Green Card lottery and have been a permanent resident since 2019! In my videos, I talk about cultural differences between America and Germany, things I like and dislike about living here, and other topics I come across in my everyday life in the States. Let me know what YOU would like to hear about in the comments below. DANKE :)

This was one of the most out standing videos you have done. I'm 77yr and have known about the White Rose movement for over 50yrs. The people in the video should never be forgotten. Thank you for retelling this story.

In 2001, I taught a college class about the German resistance during World War II, and focused on Die weiße Rose. All the students were shocked to learn about people with such conviction that they would give their lives to fight tyranny.

Sophie, Hans and their friends were the reason I started learning German as a freshman in high school. I'd pour over the leaflets and teach myself German pronunciation by memorizing them. In 11/12 grade, I taught a short course to the freshman class about die Weiße Rose and it's still the thing I'm most proud of. ❤ I have a lot of respect for their conviction and thank you Feli for retelling their story!! Grüße aus Texas 😊

German here, from Cologne, that ´s a really great video and a good mission, to tell this story to the US people. I was in Munich last year in the "Siblings Scholl Institute", where Sophie and his brother were arrested. I heard a lecture of the famous German physicist and YTer Dr. Sabine Hossenfelder there, she´s research member of the center of mathematical philosophy at the LMU Munich. So I also visited the little museum in there too. I was so impressed, that I also visited the cemetery and the grave, where these heros are buried. Thanks a lot, dear Feli, excellent work.

Your recent documentary style videos have been excellent. This was very well done. It's important people like this are remembered.

As a German I knew this story quite well; to hear it from you again, brought me to tears though. What brave young people! I am deeply impressed again more as I used to be back in the day when I learned in school about "The white rose". Because now I am an adult and am able to fully comprehensive understand what this all ment to them, their friends and family. What a terrible dilemma. If I have had the courage to act like them? I doubt it. The vast majority didn't have the power, the courage. Who are we to judge them? 😢

This is quite an evolution from your older videos. Somehow different to hear it in the voice of a native German of a similar age to the resistors. Well done!

Yes Sophie was a fearless young woman who knew she had everything to lose by standing up to the hitler regime but did it anyway. She displayed the kind of courage most young Germans were expected to show only on the battlefield but not allowed in civil society. Very happy her story and that of her brave friends is now being more widely told in books and films.

Having grown up in the German state of Bavaria, I learnt about the White Rose in history class (I think it was 10th grade/ 16y), as the poster example of a resistance movement. Their ages made them relatable as there is a good chance for having some close personal relations, like siblings and friends currently in their early twens.
We watched a play at a local theater and even the movie Feli recommended, the latter leaving me quite shocked and haunted.
And even more than a decade, I still can't put into words what it felt like, the first time I stepped into that university aula. A 19yo university student, silently asking herself 'what would I have done?'

So, thank you a lot, Feli, for bringing the story of the White Rose to people's attention. For if we all can learn something from their example, it is to keep thinking for ourselves, and stand up for our convictions.
Because there is truth in what our history teachers told us, back then: Tyranny thrives on people not speaking up. And speaking up becomes more difficult, the longer tyranny is allowed to thrive.

Incredible story. Thank you. How my grandfather survived WW1 and then had to watch as all of this unfolded. It must have been maddening. His two kids. My mother and her brother somehow both survived the war. Unreal. People are so incredibly resilient

In addition to the prison staff, the executioner, Johann Reichhart, later said that Sophie Scholl was the bravest person he had ever seen. And the movie is highly recommended.

What a wonderful job you did gathering the wealth of photos and information surrounding Die Weiße Rose! I knew about Sophie Scholl and the movement before the 2005 movie which was such a moving portrayal of these events. However the bulk of what you shared was completely unknown to me and added so much depth to their story. So very tragic, yet so redemptive. May we never forget the courage of Sophie and others who were willing to die to preserve human dignity, freedom, and speak truth to power. Thank you!!!

I’m pretty much at a loss of words, except to say this is the best YouTube video I’ve ever seen. It’s very moving!
