Nothing beat Toyota in reliability and refinement for the same price. 1980 Toyota still running around like cockroaches

I have great respect for Japanese culture because they pay very good attention to detail, quality, and performance when making things not just cars

Acura is a great alternative to German cars. They’re more fun to drive than a Toyota but similar reliability record. I’ve owned two BMW’s and two Honda’s. The BMW’s never lasted over 110, 000 miles before I gave up on them. The cost exceeds the value. The Acura Integra I had went 300, 000 miles (Not 1 problem outside routine maintenance!). BMW has critical engine parts that are plastic and not designed to go much past 80, 000 miles. Planned obsolescence.

It is also about the cost of the reliability. Because German cars are over-engineered mess, they are very expensive to fix. Japanese cars are just simple to fix. Not to mention Japanese cars can handle a lot of abuse. For example in South Asia we routinely drive cars over massive potholes at high speeds - the Japanese cars never break (to some extend even Korean ones), but German cars get fucked up with the dust and all kind of damage (It is simple really. If you have so many components in the car the more the car is abused the more likely it is one of the components break and then the car stops). This is the prime reason why in South Asia Japanese made cars sell and not German made cars.

Hello, I'm a car Mechanic from America for 27 years now. I want to tell the reason why people think German cars like BMW, Mercedes and Audi are not reliable anymore like it used to be in the past. During my years as a car Mechanic I have repaired countless German cars as well as Japanese and American cars. One remarkable case I saw during the years were, German car mileage were mostly manipulated compared to Japanese and American cars. You wouldn't believe how many cars mileage are manipulated if I would tell you. Its a big crime which is not loudly spoken. Lots of cars with over 250k to 300l mileage were sold as 100k mile. Why? Because German cars have the most profit margin. A used BMW with 100K gives you insane more cash than a BWM with 250K mileage. Beside of that I saw many people who actually can't afford a car buy a BMW or Mercedes 3rd, 4th hand etc. and skip maintaining it. If they maintain it, they do the minimal maintain.

I’m a Honda user, and won’t switch over to others even if I’m given free.

I like this kind of chat! Even better if we do straight comparison outside on the road. So people can see

Go for middle path. My wife bought a Polo 1.6 hatch that is NA and built in India. It uses a six speed Aisin Gearbox from Toyota and can withstand India’s W traffic which I believe should be worse than Malaysia due to higher population density. The car drives really well and sips fuel in town driving even less than our Perodua viva 1.0 manual. Hidden extras are auto wind down and up of all four windows. Solid body that and door that can be used to lift car back upright if overturned. Seamless welding that VW is famous for. No problems at all till today. Service is once a year only or depending on mileage. Regular service is RM600+ on average and about 1000+ for major. No regrets so far. So glad we made the decision for half Asian Half German car😄

People buy German's cars is because they like to spent the most expensives luxurious car so that make them special and make them think they are more value. But they forget the car eventually will be in dump after 10 - 20 yrs and every 5 years new generation improvement cars on market. People buy Japanese's cars is because they like the reliable and efficiency and longitive and economic which makes them smart buyers. a car in 5 years of car's maintenances services fees you looking at double of costs than the Japanese cars. If you rich and plenty money to throw is your choice. But which cars is reliable is not about how rich u can spent.

Living in the Philippines, Japanese cars is a smart choice.. lets say you have a luxurious German car and you are out of town..unfortunately something went wrong..goodbye to your luxury..nobody can fix it..while the Japanese cars which most of you are laughing at, can be fixed by anyone outside the city..driver and passengers can go back home, , and that's for me is the real luxury..

Taking a German car is like dating a hot gal. She rocks your world every night but it does not come cheap.

You guys must go to Africa. Most travel agent and guide use Toyota land cruiser, even Europe people in the last 40 years.

Actually it's true. Japanese cars are not usually high revving or performance oriented however some engines are perfectly tuned to extract the most optimum power they can. As for the German cars, stop & go traffic will really test the engine to perform under challenging conditions where their reliability might not be as good as the Japanese engines. Any car can easily run without breaking down for years if it's run mostly on highways and in cooler regions as minimal effort is required by the engine to stay in motion with continuous air flow which also avoides over heating.

One more thing I've noticed with German cars is that their engine bay is very tightly packed and there is very less space for heat dissipation which can result in certain parts heating beyond regular conditions and have premature wear & tear. Japanese cars have usually a lot of empty space and minimalistic designs keeping only what's necessary.

I think Germans are designing their cars more to suit tougher conditions as car engines have come a long way from where they were.

Very true. Good point about Japanese cars being developed for city driving.
