Can't speak to upper, but my own lower lip-tie release was great! The appearance of my chin is much improved and I can speak and emote more clearly and easily.

I have a lower lip tie that no one caught- not my airway dentist, not childhood orthodontists and dentists, not my myofunctional therapist. No one.

Fast forward, I'm 50 and going through forward expansion to reopen extraction spaces. I have lower gum recession that's halting my expansion, and for crying out loud, it was someone in an Adult Expansion FB group that pointed out that a very obvious lip tie is pulling on the tooth with the worst gum recession. I feel so stupid for not seeing it, but no one else saw it, either.

I love to have the whole story on these things, and I really appreciate your skepticism- I know you've been through so much, and your story is so valuable for those of us going through all this horrible stuff. But I'm wondering if the lower tie is a bigger part of my story- recessed chin, collapsed profile, horrible TMJ and mouth breathing issues- because no one saw it. I wish someone had, and tried to upsell me! I wonder if things would've turn out a little differently.

Well, at least I can have it treated now, and the 2 weeks of hellish pain will be a little more healing to my gums, and maybe make a 3rd round of braces a little less risky. Cheers!

I was wondering the same. All of my children have had tongue and lip tie. We only released one of lip ties because it was so thick and long she couldn't latch to nurse.the others we left. I always go back and forth in my head whether we did the right thing leaving them. I just couldn't get around causing extra pain to a baby already getting a tongue tie release.
Weird side story... My youngest sister had a lower lip tie release because it was causing her gums to reced. Turns out she actually had a rare mutation. It wasn't just a lump of flesh it was actually a muscle that sometimes grows in people with Irish genetics. My dentist, who is almost 80, said he's only seen it two times in person. The lady before my sister lost a lot of her lower teeth due to it. 😬

I think part of the problem is that like, can we trust these TMJ dentist people to evaluate it properly? Or are they just trying to sell as many as they possibly can?

It's weird, but for me the tongue tie release wasn't painful at all. And I had to do it TWICE because the first doctor didn't release it completely. Even with the latter and more major release I felt literally zero pain, only wery minor soreness immediately after the operation, which I would compare to a needle prick after vaccination or a blood test. No pain even when I rubbed and stretched the wound multiple times a day for like three weeks. I guess I just had much less sensitive nerves in that area that average people.

Mine was causing my front teeth to gap. I needed this.

It doesn't hurt real bad. But it does hurt.

I had a lip tie release when I was 13. The orthodontist said it was necessary to close the large gap between my front teeth. I don't wear an upper retainer and the gap has stayed closed.

Shortly after my baby was born I took him to get a tongue tie release because his latch was very shallow and painful. The pediatric dentist wanted me to also give him a lip tie release. (Really thick lip ties run in my family.) I wasn't going to give him one because it was going to cost $500 but she said she'd do it for free. His latch improved because he was able to flip his upper lip upward more and easier, before it was usually curled under. But I don't know if it was really necessary or if the tongue tie release would've given him enough improvement.

I had my tongue tie release done, and it was awesome and very successful and has helped me so much. I later on had a lip tie release by someone else who didn’t know what they were doing. It has healed horribly and my smile has been affected, and the tie grew back. I am considering having it done again to try and fix the issues caused by the first release. The reason I had it done was because I couldn’t close my lips before having it done, so I did need it. Now I can close them but it’s still not as comfortable as I would have liked. So there is a minor improvement, which I actually do think was probably worth it. Some people do actually need their lip ties released. Bottom line - go to someone who knows what they are doing. I wish I had the first person do mine since they did so well with my tongue tie.

What about a lip tie causing front tooth gap? And just the lip tie alone nothing else involved?

I have a grade 3 tongue tie and I'm thinking of getting it removed because it has given me posture problems as well as speech problems

I'm 32. I only just found out I have an upper lip tie. As a baby, I had constant colic, and as a child and adult it has caused me pain and tension for years. My upper lip never meets my lower without me having to consciously make it. I can't wait to get it removed, and I'm angry it was never offered just because I was able to mostly latch as a baby

I definetly agree that you have to be careful to do it, most of them would do a bad job. tying and destroying it little by little is the best approach

I'm in the middle of my MSE, 6.3 mm of expansion already with a 9 mm goal. Hasn't been too painful actually, I'm a little surprised
