Fairy tale or tragedy? Sisi (1837-1898) was a Bavarian royal whose marriage to Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph and subsequent life as Austrian empress became the stuff of legend – and of German Christmas movie classics!

Why do you reckon Sisi is still such a famous figure in Germany today?

When I was in the Army stationed in Heidelberg, I remember the Sisi trilogy being played non-stop near Christmas. I found the whole Sist story fascinating. I could speak German a little bit, so I could follow most of the movies.

Elisabeth was also body shamed by the press at those times so that’s why she began to obsess over her weight.

Leave the Sissi movies alone. It‘s tradition and we know its fiction. In the US you show Moses every year with Yul Brunner. That’s not quite based on truth either but it is tradition..
