Running at speeds up to 12000rpm in race cars, converting the reciprocating motion of the piston into rotary motion, crankshafts are the heart of a combustion engine. In order to achieve required mechanical properties most of crankshafts for automobile are forged with micro alloyed steel. Often the running surfaces of the journals are nitrated as well. Usually, the shapes of crankshafts are complex, and many defects are induced during the process of crankshaft forging such as under-filling, laps and folds. The hardness of the bearing surfaces is one of the key points of attention.
