G reviews the french thriller mini-series "La Mante"

"La Mante" or "the Mantis" was a serial killer in Paris in the 90's that did some pretty brutal and elaborate killings and in 2017 the detective that put her away is noticing a string of murders done exactly the same way. "The Mantis" her self who is named Jeanne sees this on the news and offers to help but has her own conditions. Jeanne has a son named Damien who nobody, outside of Jeanne and the detective, know is her son cause Jeanne changed her last name to protect his identity. Damien is brought in by the detective to lead his task force, work with the Mantis and hunt down the copycat.

This show has a lot of strengths to it, the authenticity of the settings helps keep you in the environment of Paris. The role of "The Mantis"is also acted well and has an uneasy yet calming way about her. The plot twists that come around involving Damien's backstory and relationship to his mom is also very interesting and provides a lot of well thought out and executed character development to both characters and you have some solid performances by the supporting actors as well.

It is however very dreary and heavy handed on a lot themes here and unfortunately Damien as a main character is not as solid a lead as we would have liked. His character came across very sporadic in his moods especially when dealing with his wife who is kept in the dark on all the goings on of the case and Damien's involvement. It would have been better if he didn't just stare a lot and get angry and frustrated all the time, which yes given the subject matter is unavoidable however the actor could have given us a bit more so we like his character instead of just caring about his wife and step daughter. Also a lot of the events that happen in the later episodes are telegraphed really early, aside from some minor twists you could see where the show and characters were going.

All in all its a decent foreign show that you wont regret watching but also wont remember for long after you see it.

The final "e" in "La Mante" is not pronounced. Thanks for the review I was wondering if the series was any good.

So so so freakin good. I love this genre of film and my God you would think with all the material out there it would be easy to translate to film but so many films do it wrong. I loved the actress who played the “mantis” because you had to guess her incentives the entire film. She was so good. She was the kind of “Hannibal” you loved to hate and found yourself rooting for. I liked that Damien flew off the handle sometimes because you had to guess whether or not the tendency of violence was inherited which is why he didn’t want kids. I saw the ending coming a mile away but I still freaking enjoyed this show because I cared about the characters overall. I also wished the Mantis had more screen time.
