Synchronous oligometastases in lung cancer

Although stage IV lung cancer is usually incurable, accumulating evidence has demonstrated a subgroup of patients with oligometastatic disease can achieve long-term survival if treated aggressively, particularly synchronous oligometastases. At the time of diagnosis, patients with stage IV synchronous oligometastatic lung cancer have a limited number of metastases that has spread to up to 2 organs. The site of metastasis is an important factor in determining treatment benefit, whereby patients with limited brain metastases tend to have superior outcomes.
