Weird Beak Shapes - And Why They Make Sense

If a bird has an unusual food, it may have an unusual beak. We cover several examples.
Long, curved beaks (like a toucan) are helpful for eating fruit.
Tubular beaks (like a hummingbird) are for eating flowers (or shellfish).
Grooved beaks (like a duck) are for filtering water.
Generalist beaks (like a crow) are multi-purpose tools. But they are rare because multiple-purpose tools aren't perfect.

Making notes, once again. Feel free to copy and paste for your own use

Curved beaks: used for eating fruit.

Found on birds like the toucan and hornbill.

Long curved beaks: fruit eating species

Tubular beaks: used for eating flowers

Found on the hummingbird.

Helps it reach into deep into flowers to get the nectar hidden inside.

Grooved beaks: used for filtering water.

Found on flamingo, and mallard duck species.

Usually feed on water, they open their beaks and get a mouthful of water and food bits.

Generalist beak: used to eat anything, birds with generalist beaks can be omnivores.

Found on crows, and grackles

Short, generic shaped.

Sizes: medium long, medium short, medium curved, and medium thick.

Recently, I was observing the painted storks. They open their beaks and scoop the fishes and let out the water😁. Remembered this when you gave example of flamingo and duck.

4:15 is a godwit, not a curlew. It does use its bill for probing in mud like a curlew, though, and so do dowitchers.

(Charles Darwin)
