Steven Spielberg's Night Skies - VHS Movie Trailer

A fan-edited movie trailer for Steven Spielberg's cancelled film project "Night Skies". The horror film was developed as a spiritual successor to Close Encounters of the Third Kind for Columbia Pictures, since Spielberg had no interest in a sequel. The story was about a family being terrorized by a group of malicious, animal-mutilating aliens, until one of the aliens named Buddy, who was kind and befriends the family's autistic son.

Steven Spielberg planned on producing the film and hired The Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Tobe Hooper to direct, Hooper declined it due to the sci-fi elements, but he suggested the plot as a supernatural story instead. Harrison Ford's then-wife and screenwriter, Melissa Mathison, read the script and developed on the sub-plot about the autistic boy and Buddy the alien into its own story.

As a result, the material from this cancelled project served as inspiration for Poltergeist and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, including characteristics from Night Skies' aliens were applied into Gremlins' Gizmo and Stripe by Spielberg's assistance.

You actually made E.T. scary. That's an amazing accomplishment. Great video!

Haunting trailer. Would’ve liked to see what Spielberg would’ve done with this concept.

You should've thrown in some scenes from Gremlins and Poltergeist as well, since they were also made from elements of the Night Skies script.

Fantastic Trailer!!! Makes me wish Spielberg actually did this (but in the bright side if this would’ve happen we wouldn’t have gotten E.T.). You had a great challenge while making this and that was making Trailer seem like a product of its would-be time and you knocked it out of the park. Congratulations man. Stay safe and awesome god bless and keep em going

Wonderful fanmade trailer. Love it. I have a printed physical copy of the John Sayles script. Never gotten a chance to read it. But the premise seemed interesting.

Nice usage of Mac & Me. That had to be based off the Night Skies alien design.

Hopefully J.J. Abrams finds the original script and directs the film.

Have you heard anything from WhiplashDynamo and his Synder Cut? He hasn't done any update in 4 months.

And to think, they almost literally went to space to film the opening scene.
