Jarvi is in his element -- ---he connects so well with the musicians .

A vivacious overture by Berlioz, very well played as well. No idea why some (in the comments below) find it "silly"! - it's their judgement which is really silly.

I love the tonicization of D close to the end! Makes this piece really fun.

Wonderful performance of a sadly neglected piece.

With Berlioz it's always difficult to say what this music is about, at least directly at the first impression I always wonder a bit if his pieces are deep or dumb. Nevertheless, I usually listen a first time to a Berlioz piece with the same sense of awe for the incredible originality, the amazing orchestral effects and his very weird sense for harmony, no matter which piece it actually is.

For example, if I want to find out, what this awkward transition at 3:40 actually is, you really need to take a look into the score. I actually come to appreciate his music somewhat more in recent years because it is so odd and strange.

I'm shallow, I know, but it sounds like 7 minutes of faffing around followed by one glorious minute of excitement. He does touch the theme a few times before that, but he drops it immediately as if it were too hot to handle. I just find it frustrating when composers skit around like stammerers who can't get a sentence out until the final rushed moments. If I didn't know to expect something, I don't think I'd have waited.

Maybe you mean "silly" in the disneyan sense of "Silly Symphonies"?

Some people just don't "get" Berlioz whereas I adore him. But then, I find that those same people have rather shallow, constricted little souls...

Not my favorite overture. It starts out much too meekly. The music doesn't seem to fit the name either. Well played and conducted, though. I wonder if the instrumentalists are taught to nod and move their bodies as they all seem to do here. It seems a bit of showmanship.
