Gabriel has a lot of faults, as does Emily. However, communication is challenging enough in relationships speaking the same language. The fact that Emily has been in France full time living and working for 4 years and yet she can not speak French at all and didn't ever really try is, for some people, a deal breaker.

G's frustration is completely understandable when disputes come o defending one's position while speaking a foreign language leaves one at a huge disadvantage. Even if she could not answer in French, understanding what he is saying shows an effort of love. As an American living in Germany and German being a language I did not know before moving here for work, I know this firsthand.

In fact, one major part of the fantasy of the show is how Emily triumps in France despite not ever having learned the language. I was motivated to learn and master German out of self-defense at work and in society and love for my partner even though I will never ever be able to better express myself in any other language but English.

Anyone who turned on Gabriel because of this scene/issue is just like Emily: clueless about the world outside of the bubble they live in.

I understand gabriel. Its incredibly frustrating having a partner who u have to speaj your second language with and then not even trying to speak yours when they have been living in your country for 4 YEARS. How da fuq do u live in France for 4 years and not know a lick of french. Wtf. France is one of the few places in the world where barely anyone in the population speaks english. U cant buy most things without knowing how to speak french because most store people speak english
