Call to ban the sale of peat in the UK due to its environmental damage

Should peat compost be banned from sale as peatland destruction is releasing more C02 into the environment? Peatlands cover three million square kilometers around the globe and in the UK around 80 percent are damaged.

"We absolutely have to reduce carbon emissions. And yet we’re digging up this vital carbon store," said Dave Goulson, professor of biology at the University of Sussex.

"As soon as you dig it up, oxygen gets into it and it starts to turn into carbon dioxide. So, all the stuff we buy from the garden center will eventually end up in the atmosphere as carbon dioxide."
