I've been playing my entire life and I've come to the conclusion the rules of golf are needlessly complicated and a few of them are just stupid.

Just drop and play the stupid ball. Slow play should be the biggest penalty. Remember there are people behind you. Keep us with the people in front of you.

those may be the rules by the letter of the law, however, in recreational golf on most golf courses, you have to maintain a pace of play and if you start walking back to the tee box, you're going to be asked politely to do something physically impossible with your club.

Meh. In a tournament, sure. If crackin' cold ones, just toss one out there. We suck at this game anyways.

I hate that rule when you spray one off the tee box. Just go to where your ball was lost, drop another one in that area and you are now hitting three.

Going back to the tee? Are you kidding me? Slow play on courses is bad enough as it is. Gotta keep a round to four hours and under.

If I understand this correctly one can secure relief within two club lengths or (as one of the two other alternatives) walk back as far as you like eg. sixty club lengths. If this is indeed the case it serves as a clear example as to how ridiculous most golf rules are. What if the golfer declares that he is opting to walk back to a comfortable spot and then drops the ball circa three clubs lengths back?  A large part of the over-weighty rule book etc. could be discarded by one simple principle: Play the ball as it lies or in very case play stroke and distance. Apologies if I had misunderstood Jeremy's explanation.
