McCarthy is the latest Republican abandoned by Trump

“You know that moment when you're watching a horror movie and a person goes down into the dark basement or out into the woods and you just instinctively yell, 'don't go down there!' Of course, they always go down there. Just like Republicans always do in the era of Donald Trump. One after another, they walk into his arms. You’re watching and everyone is warning, 'you probably don't want to do that. It’s not going to end up well.' Then they do and their careers seem to end in humiliating fashion. The latest example: the third shortest tenured speaker in American history, Kevin McCarthy.”

How many times does he have to prove he is loyal to no one, but expects unconditional loyalty from everyone?!?

Why would anyone feel any sympathy for people like McCarthy?
His fate resulted directly from the actions that he chose to take, from the decisions that he made for himself and the con-man that he chose to align himself with.
Sure, there were a couple of occasions where Kevin momentarily said some things that Trump most definitely did not like. But these were really nothing more than Kevin demonstrating what a spineless jellyfish he could be. Within a matter of days of saying anything that Trump took exception to Kevin was flying down to Mar-a-Lago to prostrate himself before and kiss the ring of Trump.
And he's not alone in this respect.
How many others in the GOP also demonstrated the lack of any backbone or convictions to the things that they once stood for?
If the GOP does eventually spiral into it's own demise, it will be because its members allowed themselves to follow the pied-piper instead of holding to the principles of what their Party once stood for. The shame of it will be how few of them had the courage to stand up to Trump.
Only the likes of McCain, Chaney and Kinzinger can rightfully hold their heads high.
Others (such as McCarthy) are choosing to slink away while they think they can escape the accusations of helping Trump and his attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
