A mountainous region in Pakistan has cause for celebration.

The Hunza Valley in Gilgit Baltistan boasts the highest rate of literacy in the country at more than 95 percent.

The Agha Khan foundation has invested millions of dollars in education.

Al Jazeera’s Kamal Hyder reports from Hunza.

I am an Indian living in Canada. I congratulate the people of Gilgit and Baltistan for making this happen.

It would be interesting to revisit the history of this region and the about the Dogra rule and whatever there is to be learnt about the history of Kashmir problem.

People of Hunza are so welcoming and nice. Government should take actions to make sure Kalash people's culture remains intact. Nice to see high literacy rate in a bit remote locations.

what the hells wrong with you people,
to all those indians who think this is kashmir. it's not
to all those who called these people balti,
it's hunza.(as the title says) and no, they are not balti, they are hunzai's
a place that was not even a part of the subcontinent, or under the british rule, for a moment do a little research before you spout nonsense, we weren't even under the agereez and you cliam us for yourselves shame on you indians, we out of our own free will joined pakistan, much later the birth of both india and pakistan
we are pakistani, and just like in the rest of pakistan, pakistan has many different cultures communities and ethnicities living together. don't confuse the hunzai's for balti, or vice versa. don't speak nonsense if you don't know nothing about it.

Thanks to community schools!

If you go deep into the education system of Hunza, even though there are a number of government-run schools, the ones that have really contributed towards achieving a close to perfect literacy rate are run by communities and independent non-government organizations. The same can be replicated in other regions of Pakistan by giving local communities ownership of their schools.

Hunza valley has come a long way. In early 60’s, the very first school other than the government-run school was inaugurated and ever since there hasn’t been any stopping. However, there is still a great need to bring quality education into the system.
