How To Become A Surgical Technologist!

In this video, I spoke with Nancy-a surgical technologist aka surgical tech about her job and what all it requires!

WHAT IS A SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST?
Surgical technologists are members of operating room teams, which include the surgeon(s), anesthesiologist and circulating nurse. Surgical technologists work under the supervision of the surgeon. Before an operation, they help prepare the operating room by setting up sterile surgical instruments, equipment and supplies, such as drapes, gowns, gloves, suction tubing, and receiving solutions and medications from the circulator. Surgical technologists assemble the sterile equipment, check to ensure it is all working properly and make adjustments as necessary.

They assist the surgeon with putting on his/her gown and gloves, as well as assisting the surgeon in placing the sterile drapes on the patient to create the sterile field.

During the surgical procedure, the surgical technologist is responsible for anticipating the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and providing needed supplies such as sponges, performing counts of the instruments and sharps, providing solutions and medications to the surgeon, receiving tissue specimens to be passed off to the circulator and ensuring there are no breaks in sterile technique in order to prevent the patient from acquiring a surgical site infection.

Scrub techs learn 10% in schools and 90% on the jobs. It’s a highly skilled job that requires effort and time to achieve effectively.

Are you guys mean to the techs, one of the program requirements are able to take insults from doctors which i thought was hilarious and weird but tbh i honestly understand since life and death is on the table.

So my friend is a surgical tech in a hospital in california.
She has been written up three times for attendance now by a supervisor who does not like her at all, twice because she had to have actual surgery and needed time off and the first time because of a silly misunderstanding.
So she just had surgery couple days ago and has called in not able to work, supervisor wrote her up and now HR sent a message saying she was on an adminastrive leave and they'd contact her next week?

Can they just fire her?
What should she do?
Does she have any rights?
