On December 13th, 2017, a Russian Su-25 nearly collided with an F-22 Raptor. The US and Russia both established a deconfliction line in Syria, in October 2017, according to which the US would have authority over the skies east of the Euphrates River, and the Russians would manage the airspace in the south. In November, East of the river, two A-10 Warthogs came extremely close to colliding directly with a Russian Su-24, and then two days later, two F-22 Raptors engaged an Su-24 that had entered US-controlled skies. Throughout this engagement, the Su-24 made three straight passes over coalition forces on the ground. However, on December 13th, the main action took place when two F-22s intercepted two Su-25s inside US-controlled airspace. One of the Frogfoots flew perilously close to the Raptor when US pilots tried to alert the Russians, almost colliding. Though Moscow claimed that the Su-25s had been escorting aid cargo and that the F-22 had crossed the line to harass their aircraft. The F-22 pilot made an aggressive maneuver to avoid the collision.
