Join Dr. Peter Carter, Paul Beckwith and Regina Valdez as they discuss President Biden’s approval of ConocoPhillips’ Willow Project, a massive and decadeslong oil drilling venture on Alaska’s North Slope in the National Petroleum Reserve, which is owned by the federal government.

This video was recorded on March 15th, 2023, and published on April 1st, 2023, and represents the opinions of the discussion participants.

Some of the topics discussed:
- Biden’s backing out of a promise made during the 2020 presidential campaign of “No more drilling on federal lands, period.”
- How there will be a need to build a whole infrastructure of roads in one of the largest remaining pristine areas in the USA.
- The studies in both Canada and globally of how young people say that climate change is affecting them day to day and in many cases resulting in the decision to not have children.
- How the International Energy Agency (IEA) provided the very grim news that fossil fuel CO2 emissions are now at a record high.
- How China is accelerating its coal mining by mining more coal than any other nation in the world and how the world economy is not working for our future on the planet.
- and much more. . .

I agree with Paul Beckman and Nate Hagens our society will refuse to give up the benefits of ff and live in a society that renewable energy can power so there will be a collapse.
The best we can do individually is to move to end our energy demands as much as we can. Get off the grid with solar and a small well insulated house heated with a heat pump. Raise your own permiculture gardens or food forest. Be ready for what is coming and try to live the post carbon pulse lifestyle before it is forced on you without the resouces we have left today to setup the lower energy lifestyle.

I live in Denmark and have my hands in the soil every day . I have clearly noticed a dramatic change in micro organismens and insekts, who are not there any more . The dead bodies of some birds and mice, which I have observed, are not decomposing completely and take way longer just to dry up and shrink .
For the past 4 years I have also noticed, there is less and less mist on everything outside . Even after a large change in temperature from day to night, all my tools and materials and even the windows of the car often stay dry.
About 30 to 40 cm into the ground I often find leaves and twigs which also hasn´t started decomposing probably .
I am turning 60 next year and have spend most of my life outside is like watching someone dying ...bit by bit .

Thanks you guys. So heartbreaking to see the decline of life on earth. I’m a lifelong hiker and nature lover and I’m a field biologist. Drove my Subaru all over California working on projects trying to save the desert tortoise, Mohave ground squirrel, rare plants and habitats in places where new solar plants or roads etc. were planned. I’m sure I did more damage than anything else with all that driving. It was in the name of conservation. The existence of humans means the death of nature.

Over one weekend the federal government found 300 billion dollars to back the wealthy account holders in SVB and other banks. We could fund a transition to renewable energy if it was an equal priority to our leaders as the wealthy account holders

Thanks for all your honest reporting. Yes! We are so screwed. The future has been sold to the highest bidder. It was like this forever!

They won't stop till the last drop is extracted. Not that we'll make it that long.

Our species has completely backed itself into a corner. We can't keep drilling for fossil fuels because of the climate consequences, leading to untold amounts of suffering and death, but we can't stop because our society as its constructed will simply collapse in on itself without it, leading to untold amounts of suffering and death. There are no good answers.

my thoughts? We're coming OUT of a number of system influences that typically denote a cooler planet;- i.e., switching from a solar minimum to a maximum, switching from a la nina to an el nino, (or perhaps a super el nino), and the biggie, we're about to experience our first blue ocean event. Combine this with the methane clathrate bomb and we're looking towards a planet that will be full under the influence of a number of positive self-reinforcing feedback loops that are going to catastrophically fuel one another.

We've been in the mild beginning of major state change for decades and very few are cognizant of the fact that this event is happening at a rate of 10, 000x that of the mass extinction events the planet has undergone this past billion years. ...

My concern is how folks are going to react when much of this becomes evident. Those of us who haven't yet gone through the 5 stages of grief are going to run into bargaining, denial, and they're going to think that there's something they can "do" about this. ... Something radical, something drastic, something fed by outrage, misconception, fear that leads to atrocities. When the world is in need of planetary hospice, the world will respond by offering up madness.

Thank you for all you do, it is much appreciated. Ive felt for some time now that it will take an environmental catastrophe impacting any particular country to bring about meaningful change in that country. I have no evidence for any real, meaningful change in the UK for all the words and protests little of substance has happened. BAU, denialism and self delusion dominate even when most people accept the need for change. I have little optimism for big change, I focus my energy and draw what little optimism I have from acting local to build local resilliance and a local food growing community. I am cinvinced Governments have left the necessary big actions too late,

I remember reading about oil in Alaska back in 2014 and thinking 'Nah, they won't drill that. By the time they need that oil climate change will be so obvious that drilling more oil would be blatant suicide.'

I appreciate your wonderful team making the good fight every week. You provide important information that provides a powerful perspective of where we are and what we have to do. Your anguish of our predicament shines through. However, if we assume you get 1000 views then only of the US population and of the world population is watching your videos. Maybe if those fractions were 0.10 we'd have a snowball's chance in our hot world of getting something done. I think the world's waiting for that really scary tipping point that shows us all just how serious our situation is and then we will hope that it is not too late to salvage whatever Nature can from the pieces that are left over.
