At this moment I feel like YouTube is the only platform that is irreplaceable. More and more people are searching for an instagram alternative.

The thing is no one is forcing you to be "fake" on Instagram or other social media. You have the choice not to be. But people are just addicted to it, so they need BeReal as a sort of 'Rehab' where they're not allowed to be fake.

I see BeReal just as an app to talk to friends and see what they're up to.
Personally, I've made this mental switch to be sceptical about everything I see on (for example) Instagram. But i don't think BeReal will be "The Instagram Killer".
Just another app to the constantly evolving world.

BeReal feels like an app that may be used by people just as an addition to their existing social media rather than a replacement of instagram. Moreover i would not want an app disturbing me at random times bugging me to post random pictures.

it's so sad that the social media that harms us, gets us obsessed and addicted, is by its concept more successful than the one that brings us together

I think the difference is that this really highlights our real life social group. Which how broad every social media platform is, from influencers, to celebrities, family, friends, artists, brands, schools, having accounts on there, the content is very unpersonal. It doesn't feel like real connections.

At the same time, Be real almost feels dystopian in how IT decides when YOU need to use it to stay "relevant"

The thing no one seems to mention is that you can post a "late" bereal which can be planned. It has to be after a certain time, but if the bereal comes at 9am, you can post your bereal whenever you want. I'm saving mine for when I'm going to do sports later cause I was eating dinner when it came up

My main issue with it is that the premise encourages you to have your phone on you constantly, with notification sounds on. I don't want to have to be essentially on call all day just to post a picture - which more likely than not is going to happen during a time of the day where I have nothing interesting to take a photo of anyway.

Honestly life just moves so fast I like that you can look back and see what you were doing at random days, and the weeks don’t just all merge together.

I don't have BeReal, but I know people who do, and it's astonishing to me how fake people can be within two minutes. I understand BeReal solves a problem, but at least people would post on Instagram in their own time. Sometimes I'm in the middle of a conversation with somebody where at the moment they get the notification, they stop me in the middle of my sentence and push a camera in my face. BeReal might improve the experience of social media, but it is definitely more intrusive for the people they interact with in real life. At least in my opinion.

Also, it invites people to be fake in the moment. Which is arguably even worse. I'm doubtful whether some of these 'hilarious, in the moment' BeReals are actually real and not staged. Who says that guy didn't just flip his plate the moment he got the BeReal notification to come across as 'authentically hilarious'?

I feel like BeReal its designed to keep you on a leash, tied to the apps desire and keeping you pending of the phone and notifications all day long. You can be real on Instagram, and you should not care if others are real or not. Just be yourself and keep your friends on the physical world and not as much in the virtual one

I think the main problem with BeReal is that it's super underdeveloped as an app. It's hard to scroll all the way to find someone. They should add an easier to find a specific BeReal feature.

I installed it, I liked the idea... until I saw a post where they noted the danger of everyone putting where they really are. Perhaps in more advanced countries it would not be a problem, but the fact that an app or people know almost exactly where and what you are doing at that precise moment is something, at least alarming.

I don’t really get how BeReal is that much different from any other social media app since you can just ignore the 2 minute timer and post whenever you want, still often highlighting the best part of your day, showing a ”fake” life.

A lot of people have said this, but I want to say it too. What’s stoping some one from faking something in those 2 minutes? It’s dam easy to stop what your doing, make something fake and then go back to what your doing.

For Be Real to show you who you really are, without the use of fake filters & add-ons, boosts your confidence more than any other social media app out there. It's honest and "no pretending."

The paradox with this is that social media pushes us towards getting attention. Right now it will be a "hype" to be original but with time being original will eventually become, "unoriginal" and boring. The race towards posting "most original photo" will lead to the purpose being defeated unless appropriate changes are made to the app.

Early adopters of Facebook were quite close to this app since they posted their lives. So yeah, you can say that this is a refined form of Facebook.

Short term success? Yes
Long term sustainability? Doubtful

I also think there is a severe element of privacy. It’s hard to trust any social media harvesting your data when it makes you take random pictures during your day. At least with social media today, you can control what you’re comfortable with them seeing.

This is a very dangerous app in my opinion...giving your location at a real time. Even friends and people you think you know can be stalkers...that's why I never post in real time💀

2:26 I'm genuinely dying just imagining someone rushing to get a fire extinguisher, getting the notification and just stopping immediately to take a picture of their kitchen's certain doom
