Mixed Mud Textures

VERY SIMPLE techniques using two different textures (matt and gloss) to add contrast and depth to the mud effects on the panzer IV. I used VALLEJO products throughout, please don't message me asking what I used as it's all right there in the video... I even listed the colours !

I just got my first pigments in the mail yesterday and I'm making the rusty engine parts with hairspray like in your other video. I am definitely going to wet mud some of my wheels like this too. What a good idea with the Future! I still have some left from weathering olive drab ;). Thx again for doing these videos you have certainly made my afternoons much more fun.

An excellent video, something I'm going to be trying out on my next project, glad to see a new vid from you, some of the best modeling resource on you tube!

@PanzerM

I've used woodland scenic cement also - great stuff to have on the workbench, it will work as described but be careful pouring that stuff - it's runny ! I learned this the hard way LOL

Thanks for the tips. Wasn't sure how to go about doing mud on my KV-1.

I read your side text.. and I must say that sometimes it makes you wonder.. when indeed you state something in the video, and people still ask.. Don't they pay attention, or haven't they really watched?? Never mind that, this is a great tutorial.. Just in the final throes of a T-55 Tank in 1/72 scale, will have to see just how much I bother mudding it.. :) :)

@ScaleModelMedic I know.. helping other modellers is great fun generally, in as much as I'm able to help anyone at all.. I just do the basic stuff, but try and help when I can! :) My skill level is not likely to improve much more now, not for lack of wanting to, but I have nowhere to airbrush, and if you don't airbrush, things like pre- and post shading and other techniques are much more difficult to perform as well.. :P So I'm pretty much stuck..

hello mate. it is not so much a gloss surface, but rather a satin finish. In the colour modulation video you see me mixing satin in with the paint...that's the end result. If anything it doesn't help, a pure matte finish would hold pigment better, but it looks better with a sheen as it recreates the paint jobs I see in museums etc which are rarely matte finish.

@ToAstYNaChO I wrapped a little tape around the cocktail stick to make it a tight fit into the hole in the wheel and then just pushed the wheel on.

they work dry too... not just for mud ! they are a very good alternative to mig's range - 30ml instead of 20ml and cheaper too...

@ScaleModelMedic Hi mate! I would recomend as you may allready know. Putting light mud colors first as dry mud never splashes and keeps dry on wet mud. Go from light to dark, it will look more realistic. Cheers!

That is a very interesting style of mudding up. It looks like you have a gloss surface to start on. Does this matter? I use Hudson and Allen "Mud" powder, mixed with water and a drop or 2 of micro sol to make it 'wetter" I apply this, and I can vary the texture by the amount I apply, and by the initial thickenss of mix I make. Then I go back, and airbrush color to create variaitions

@jaja1818 its the modellers main weapon for wet earth/damp earth effects, its very good for it. you can buy it at any grocery store or walmart etc. i use it for past effects to make great wet mud.

I don't mind answering questions, in fact I love sharing what I know (hence the channel!) but sometimes the answers are in the videos - each video takes a long time to make... that's why I've started listing all the colours and stuff, just to make life a bit easier.

is the johnsons klear available in super markets or is it a specialist item? Also is it under a different name now or the same one?

hey its me again, how did you mount the wheels on the cocktail stick? just with tape or glue?

@ScaleModelMedic would the same watered down matt varnish give a salt stained, or frost bitten effect? if one did it in a layered effect, similar to a rust effect?

sure elmers (white or pva glue) would work, just be real careful with it... too much and it will show through your pigments and look like plastic. IF you diluted it first it should be fine.

Using a mixture of white glue and real, sifted soil might be a good thing to consider if you're doing huge models. It might not be as straightforward as using pigments but it would be cheap and quicker.
