An ancient Roman mosaic floor, estimated to be around 1,800 years old, has been discovered in remarkable condition beneath a vineyard in Italy. The mosaic once adorned a villa from the Roman era.

The floor is beautiful. However, the more suprising thing is how much soil has built up over the years. It makes me wonder how they found it. Also how much other stuff we walk over without knowing.

There was a similar situation in Koln (Cologne) Germany whereby they were digging next to their Cathedral and found a mosaic floor that they merely built a museum around and filled it with relics they also found there.

What would have happened for several feet of dirt to be over this and yet people forgot it was there? Was it a sudden event that covered it and killed anyone who knew of it? Or a gradual event that even over time it was forgotten about?
