In the planned opening for the prequel it was supposed to show the Thing killing and assimilating the crew of the UFO. The pilot of the craft tried to kill the Thing by doing a suicide dive into Antarctica, but instead the creature crawled out of the wreckage and froze. In fact, near the end where Kate and the other guy go into the ship she was supposed to find the mummified remains of the pilot and a few burned or half-turned alien corpses.

If you think about it makes more sense if is was the dog. It started with the dog and it ended with the dog. That whole ordeal repeated it self at Outpost 31 IF you count in the deleted ending that is. I take that as something symbolic.:)

I've always been curious as to the UFO crash. Did the thing cause the crash of another species spaceship, or was the thing the species that was exploring the galaxy before it had and accident and crash landed?

The movie would have been better if they had kept it an all-male cast like the first movie. That all-male element added more testosterone and tension to it.
