The National World War II Memorial on the National Mall in Washington DC was completed in 2004. It not only honors the sixteen-million men and woman who served in uniform during the war, it also honors the memory of 416,800 who gave their lives. The memorial was inspired by a regular GI who wondered why there was no National Memorial in Washington. Roger Durbin worked for decades to bring the memorial into reality. He passed away before it was completed. The fact that so many of the Greatest Generation were passing away became the inspiration for an organization called the Honor Flight Network. It's mission is to take as many World War II vets as possible to Washington to tour the memorial as well as other sights. They are now taking Korean and Vietnam War veterans on Honor Flights to Washington.

Thank you for posting this video. My father+ did his National War Service in Northern Ireland and England with the 5th Aerdrome Squadron and my mum+ worked toward the war effort in a munitions plant in Oklahoma City until my father returned States side in 1945, and both parents are listed on the Memorial. I was able to visit the Memorial in the Autumn of 2005 and was able to see both my parents'+ names listed.
