In this seminar, Associate Professor Ian Thompson presents research from a very large UK study, titled ‘Excluded Lives: The Political Economies of School Exclusion’. Little is known, from the perspective of children and young people and their families, about the processes leading up to exclusion from the classroom or school or the processes that follow; in particular, the decisions that are taken to ensure that children and young people receive an education outside of mainstream schooling or that they make the transition back to formal education. This session will focus on the innovative methods used in the Excluded Lives project in order to conduct research at the micro level. It will provide insight into ways of working with young people on research design through a child’s rights lens.

To help to contextualise the research, a panel asked questions from their organisation’s perspective.
Panel members:
• Helen Connolly, Commissioner for Children and Young People South Australia.
• Dr Deb Price, Centre for Research in Educational and Social Inclusion, University of South Australia
