Edison 2023 Demoparty | DIVE Into the Demoscene

Edison is the biggest multiplatform demoparty in Sweden, and it takes place once per year in Stockholm. I decided to visit Edison 2023 to get a taste of what it's like - and to explore what the demoscene is all about.

In this video I visit Eggeby Farm in the north part of Stockholm to hang out with 100 other geeks focused on watching and producing demos. Demos is a decades old tradition of creating audiovisual presentations intended to show off technical and artistic skill - and to compete against other groups to see who creates the most beautiful, or at least most interesting, demo.

The demoscene started in the 1980s, and it was going strong well into the 90s as well. But it has its roots all the way back in the 1950s, when the first screen hacks were produced. But what we call a demo these days mostly emerged from the cracking scene of the 80s and the 90s. Cracking groups would leave small messages and intros showing off their skills - and eventually those presentations grew more and more elaborate, and became the main focus rather than the cracking.

Art and music are extremely important components of a demo, and there are individual competitions for art, animations, and music as well. No video about a demoparty would be complete without a look at some chiptunes as well - and some geeky partying along with that.

Thanks for the fine report about Edison I unfortunately could not attend this year (need to pick up the prizes some day, heh). I’m sure to use it when someone asks me the next time “what is the demoscene?”.
