Synology DS920+ Review: Powerhouse NAS for the Pro User

The DS920+ is an affordable NAS for the power user, capable of breezing through 4K video transcodes, running virtual machines, and Docker containers. The only disappointment is the lack of 2.5Gb Ethernet connectivity.

Having a nas is a great addition to any person lately, not relying on the cloud in some scenarios is safer and faster

Fantastic review. Before watching your video, I pretty much decided I was going to purchase the DS920+. It's available in the country I reside, but I was worried that it wasn't great given it's reasonable price. You mentioned a few things I really liked that made me feel much more comfortable with my decision to purchase (Synology Moments, an Pi-Hole). I am not saying I will specifically use those applications, but just knowing that I *could* use them if I wanted makes me feel confident that this is a good purchase.

One thing I still need to research is the Synology Hybrid Raid. Specifically how it works and what are the optimal configurations of drives.

The bit about being able to mismatch drives and hotswap in bigger ones as time moves on... and still enjoy one drive reduncancy... That is what sold me on this thing.

That was actually the best Review I have seen. Interesting usecases mentioning that 8gb are a Limit of the cpu and a great review. If I didn't have it already it would have convinced me to buy

One little nitpick: at about 10:00 you explain that one can expand the available space by replacing the smallest disk with one equal to or larger than the *largest* (remaining) disk. This is almost correct: the replacement must be at least as big as the one you are replacing. The (newly) available space will, however, be determined by the size of what will be the smallest disk *after* the replacement. So in a 4TB+8TB setup, exchanging the 4TB disk for a 6TB disk will work just fine, and effectively add 2 TB.

Great Nas. Picked one up a few weeks ago with 4x 16tb drives.

Really informative! Had some questions prior to considering but your video really helped clear things up.

Btw what is that animated display next to your laptop?

Great video! I have this in my cart and about to check out. I have a question, why do people consider the standard raid as not having a backup? I have a DS918+, but looking for something a little more powerful and back up everything from my current NAS.

thanks for your video.
I had a QNAP NAS.... which auto shutdown, few days ago, after 8 years of use.
I guess it's the temperature sensor.... 😞. So i'm checking on the "competition" (for me, only 2 brands : QNAP or Synology ).
It's too bad there is no 2.5Gb Ethernet connectivity... i just got very high internet and it's a day and night service now (and to think I started mon 33K modem.. oh my...). I don't know if I'm not "far" from a refresh of models, by Synology, for the end of the year ??

Do you recommend the nvme drives to be in read only or read/write? I have 2 x 1tb. 1 for my movies and tvs shows - Dont think it would be doing much on that one and another on my pics and important documents and docker runs on it with a dedicated games server also.

What's the difference between the DS920+ and the DS1520+ other than the extra drive bay (4 vs 5) and extra memory (4gb vs 8gb respectively)? Amazon shows the DS1520+ about $150 USD more and considering the extra drive bay and memory that doesn't sound too terribly unreasonable, unless it's missing a feature?

I'm new to the NAS thing, but trying to find a good setup for my Wife's 4k video content (for saving 4k video projects). Also having support for IP cameras would be a HUGE plus.

Im used to retro computer videos coming up on my youtube page. I thought this was an expansion box for a TI99

Looking to get my first NAS and have my eye on this, you got me at PiHole (been running that on a real Pi for 2 years), you answered one of the questions I had about mixing and matching different drives over time to increase the size. Can the USB port on the back be used to add an external HD and then somehow make the NAS auto backup the complete NAS to it (as long as it fits of course) will it maybe sport a small USB hub so I can have a USB enabled UPS? what size SSD cache drives do you recommend for both slots ?

I know it's a kind of new/fresh tech, but there are some RTL8152/8153/8156 USB 2.5G ethernet adapters might just work with this little puppy. I've just ordered one today.
Can I use it for a direct pc connection, or I need to upgrade in to a 2.5G switch as well?

I am considering the 920+, but wondering if I should just wait for the 922+...whenever it will come out this year.
