In today’s video we’ll look at why transition metal ion complexes are coloured. We’ll discuss how the splitting of d-orbitals leads to this coloured effect. Then we’ll look at how the complimentary colour system works and discuss colour’s dependency to the energy gap and the factors that affect the energy gap (i.e. the transition metal, oxidation state, ligands). Next, we’ll be introduced to colorimetry, a process used to measure the concentration of the solution, and we’ll look at how it works. In conclusion, we’ll tackle an exam style question.
