Stephen Layton accepting the Gramophone Award

The Choir of Trinity College Cambridge has become the recipient of a prestigious Gramophone Award for its recording of Herbert Howells' Requiem & other works.

It is the first Cambridge college choir to be awarded this accolade and follows on from its nomination for a US Grammy Award earlier in the year.

The winners were announced at the 2012 Gramophone Awards event at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Thursday 27 September.

Extremely talented choral conductor, one of my absolute favourites.

Well-deserved. The man is an inspiration. As are all Cambridge, Oxford, and other English college chapel, cathedral and parish choirmasters. A bit of a way to go here in South Africa in this respect, but my university students who follow this tradition are inspired by the example of Mr Layton and his peers. The English choral tradition, with all its offshoots, is the reason English contemporary music is so well-regarded today. No person should pass up the opportunity to sing in such a choir.
