Cold Enough For Snow by Jessica Au BOOK REVIEW

Cold Enough For Snow is a delightful meditation on family and memory. It beautifully captures its setting and does more with 100 pages than many books do with 500. But something annoyed me...

I agree, a wonderful and delightful book. The author should be immensely proud for having wrote it. And goodness the latest cover design by New Directions is a piece of art. But this book has almost been written before. Reminded me a lot of Ishiguro's "Pale View of Hills, " another hazy study of the mother-daughter dynamic. Both are interestingly Asian transplants to the Anglosphere.

I love this book. Giramondo published this novel in Australia and I feel the need to say that Giramondo's other published works are worth checking out as well. Also, great review!

Insightful review as always!
I do agree that the prize is very ambitious but I think that’s a good thing. The dilemma is that most books that have proven to “explore and expand the possibilities of the form” only do so in retrospect. I think we need time to tell whether this particular book was able to do that. But a prize that seeks out writers who at the very least make that audacious attempt is worthwhile. And I think it’s interesting that they chose a book with such a quiet (almost imperceptible) power as its inaugural winner. I found it moving in ways that I haven’t experienced from other novels but I am yet to pinpoint why. Perhaps I would need to read it a few more times to clarify how it pushes the boundaries of the novel. Time will tell.

Great review and good point on the prize description (although I wouldn't get too worked up about it ;)).
I just finished it and loved how she describes how we as children want our parents to enjoy what we enjoy, give them what we think is special, only to find that they have their own tastes and desires.

I’m glad to hear your positive review. It’s a book I’d like to read with its descriptive calmness and meandering about the city while pondering ones life. Regarding the Novel prize where they say, “Explore and expand the possibilities of form” do they mean a book more like “An I-Novel” with the author’s take on trying to convey English and Japanese language while writing in English, plus the beautiful photos?

I really love the idea of being slightly frustrated at the book for being overrated.

I have many of these: Lord of the rings, Moby Dick, Wuthering Heights, Twilight. Anna Karenina, catch-22, infinite jest. Probably more...

Hello thank you for your review about this book.
A question : What morals can we learn from it ?

Is this an annual prize? If so, I imagine it would be hard to identify a book every year that clearly pushes the boundaries of what a novel is. I've heard people say the same thing about the Nobel Prize in economics: that a lot of them seem not very exciting compared to some of the other categories because truly field-changing advances in economics don't come along as often as they do in, say, biology (which isn't even a category, and so those advances have to be squashed into either "medicine" or "chemistry").
