I used Pimsleur Vietnamese in 2002. Back then it was OG cassette tapes. I kept at it until I became a certified Vietnamese medical interpreter in the state of Oregon about six years ago. My accomplishments in Vietnamese speak for themselves, and it all began with Pimsleur. I know Dr. Ngô Như Bình personally and I can vouch that his work with Pimsleur is unmatchable. I tried Rosetta Stone a few times and had a fun laugh. It was cute a BS marketing rip off. You’d be better off learning in a college course than Rosetta Stone if you have access.

Thank you for the unbiased review. I love the way you highlight the pros and cons of all the programs/apps you review, and that you also make mention of things like which programs visual learners may gravitate towards. I'm seriously looking into learning Tagalog, as I want to add an extra layer of closeness with my Filipina GF who I'll be visiting for the first time in a couple of months.

I'm not great at picking up new languages, sadly, but I do note with interest that the Spanish I learned while in Ecuador back in 1981 still works to some degree more than 40 years later, because I was in-country while I learned it, the training was regular (part of my education at an American school in Quito), and the systematic way of learning it from the ground up really embedded it in my mind. Indeed, for the first 20-odd years after returning to NZ, I could dream reasonably fluently in Spanish (not that my Spanish was ever great - very "basic conversational").

I know learning a language is best done when one is younger, but I'm hoping I have sufficient motivation, ha ha, to get a basic handle on Tagalog. My GF's English is pretty good, but I think it would be a way of honouring her by at least having a go at learning her main language. 🙂 I've checked out your review on Mondly, and now this one, and I think I'm leaning towards Pimsleur, even though I'm a visual learner, for 2 reasons. 1) It has the 7 day free trial. 2) From your review (including the one on your website), I think, on balance, I'm likely to get a fuller grasp of Tagalog through it. Time will tell. 😀

This was a really good video. The punchline is definitely that these are both great programs and that if you are more of a visual learner Rosetta Stone will probably work better for you and if you are more of an auditory learner then Pimsleur will probably be your better choice. Both Rosetta and Pimsleur are great both founded on very solid language learning principles. It really in the end, depends on what kind of learner you are.

This was a very insightful video! You covered everything in a way that made it very easy to understand and use accordingly.

I'm beginning to learn Spanish so that i can communicate with my colleagues here more easily and make new friends. (many students here are Hispanic or of latin-american descent )

I've always thought it was very impressive to be multilingual and I wanted to lean more languages myself, as I only know 2 languages now. I am also traveling to Mexico and thats why I'm learning Spanish now as my 3rd language

Just like anything else in life, there are the tools and then there is your brain and your journey.

I do think though that a combination of different tools/ modalities is the way to go, with using one as your main one

I noticed that it was with Rosetta Stone that I was able to retain. Yes, the repetition can get tedious. But as a former Marine turned former ESL teacher, I know that repetition works

The images also help me in retaining words and sentences.

Currently, I'm pairing Rosetta with listening to Russian music, and having Chat GPT write out common conversations. But watching this video, I'm going to add in Pimsleur.

I tried the free lesson on Pimsleur and I like it too. I think both Rosetta and Pimsleur would compliment each other; again, according to my brain.

Oh and a tip I gave to my ESL students that I'm also following: Don't worry about perfection at first. The mistakes can be polished through time

Rosetta stone used to be the lead of language programs, but now they are being surpassed by others. Glad to see the competition to help me learn French for work.
