when I was still in university some idiots thought they were so clever saying they were free to say whatever they wanted in the quad. Like, yeah dude, you and every other person on the planet is free to say whatever BS you want where it doesn't matter!

Freedom is a frustrating concept because it doesn't actually make any claims on behaviour. As a social concept it's better thought if backwards - freedom is usually the default, so how can outlying problems be managed? Bad faith actors, persuasive misinformation, etc. Personally prefer an 'accountability of speech' method which scales with power/influence. Put simply your average citizen talking shit is irrelevant whereas Murdoch gets put on trial for the harm caused, his 'freedom if speech' be damned
