Why Patrick Campbell Is So Wrong About ADHD?

In this video I display and discuss a short video clip from Patrick Campbell’s YouTube Shorts website, I Don’t Know (But I’m Going to Find Out). The video is entitled “Is Everyone with ADHD Faking It?.” I dismember the claims in the video demonstrating that most of them are simply untrue. Moreover, the video is filled with slurs against the physicians who have studied ADHD (“brain nerds”) not to mention against people with ADHD. So why is Patrick Campbell saying so many falsehoods about ADHD? You be the judge of that, but it’s clear to me that the video is replete with untruths.

I used to believe ADHD was “invented” by drug companies because there is a heavy misinformation on this. Since I’m taking my medication my life has changed.

I wish these misinformation stops and you’re helping tremendously.

Just to comment on the "brain nerd" part. What I've noticed in the past 10-15 years is that the word "nerd" has moved away from being a slur into being a more of a positive title. This probably has to do with the rise of the internet and other fields where smart people are held in high regard by the greater population and in the pop culture as a whole. So even though "nerd" was very much a slur when I was growing up, it's more like badge of honor for people these days. I'd imagine this is even more so with the younger generations.

Overall this short is ridiculous. Thank you for reacting to it and correcting the inaccuracies. There's so much misunderstanding of the condition all over the internet and the world. It's very refreshing to see your takes on these matters from the point of view of someone who actually knows what's going on. We greatly appreciate your continued work in the field through free public education 🙏

Public healthcare is still decades behind - at least here in Finland - in terms of understanding ADHD and providing support to those suffering from it. I'm a 33 year old guy myself and it took me two years of depression and anxiety treatment, self-study and self-advocation to even get on the queue to get a chance to be diagnosed. This was even after a psychiatrist recommended it and the screening tool performed by a general doctor being extremely positive. Now I have a 2 year wait ahead of me to actually get tested. It's madness.

This is such an amazing Video Dr Barkley. I am so sick of these social media contents and their creators' mindset who make shallow, untrue and unscientific videos and either misinforme, insult or turn ADHD and basically any mental/physical situation and difficulty into sth shallow or even a "fake thing" just to earn the money. A little bit of funny content can be accepted (depending on the context) but we should remember that these are serious issues and people suffer because of them, both in their childhood and adulthood. They might call me "too sensetive" for this, but I'd say, responsibility (socially, morally etc.) is a key factor in making us different from other live species ! If you have no medical or academic specialty in the subject, just stay out it.

How dare that man call himself 'I Don't Know', whilst being unwilling to do more than cursory research and use derogatory terms to describe people like neuroscientists, ADHD experts and Special Needs programs! If having ADHD will/would be a crime at some point in this world we live in, I would want no other than Dr. Russel Barkley to be my representative and defense. I have to say that it's incredibly soothing, having someone so intelligent and caring on the side of ADHD people. As angry as the video made me, as comforting it is to know that there is a voice like yours out there, fighting for those who cannot do it for themselves.
