At the end of the day, what you like is all that matters. It could be debated what type of games have the most success but its for not really. I personally love single player semi-linear for the sake of time spend in a game lol. But open world has its fun too.

Because most open world games are so open it's like the content spilled out. people talk about breath of the wild being an incredible game but there is basically 0 story or progression. the only 'content' to be found in the game is finding memories of a story that already happened before the game started.

I think semi linear can be the best. Games that are TOO linear offer basically nothing going back through if its like DARK SOULS III. I think one of my favorites is RE4 remake. I love the way yhe exploration of yhe maps is in that game.

Hot take, this also applies to Elden ring. I felt that I hit a plateau with weapon progression and levels by the time I got to Sir Gideon. the open world nature of it meant that I got my weapon pretty much to maximum upgrades just from exploring. in this sense I greatly prefer DS3 or DS2 due to the areas being somewhat linear with your progression.

Ahem:
* The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
* Red Dead Redemption 2
* Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom
* Grand Theft Auto 5 (It's been remade 5+ times for every generation)
* Horizon Series
* ELDEN RING
* Elder Scrolls (Skyrim, anyone? Also been remade many times)
* Marvel's Spider-Man 1
etc...

Many of those games are fantastic. Just as easily as we can sort through the junk open world games, we can do that for any linear game as well.
I counter and say, there is no right answer, and we can not get one, the best vs the best of both types match up, its just what kind of game you want to play.

And yes, I heard you at the end say: "That's not the rule though..."

EDIT: I did not read the summery, stating "At the end of the day, what you like is all that matters. It could be debated what type of games have the most success but its for not really. I personally love single player semi-linear for the sake of time spend in a game lol. But open world has its fun too."
I jumped to conclusions. Twice. I admit, my mistake.

Eldenring and BG3 are prime examples of how amazing open world /can/ be when the developers actually are allowed the time and resources to craft a world that's teeming with interaction and story, rather than the same assets copy-pasted over and over again with tons of effectively empty space between a few key locations.

Unfortunately, "Open World" is one of those buzz word genres that sells well in marketting, and so nowadays the range of quality and care with that genre name is so wide that it's almost meaningless.

Linear games are definitely easier to create, and so the average for them is at least much better for sure.
