I don't think you are harsh at all here, Manu -- in fact, this is refreshingly emphatic! And your advice carries considerable weight because you draw upon your own experiences in language learning and teaching. Thank you for your recommendations and insights!

Grazie mille Manu! I'm so thrilled about this video because I am just beginning 8 months of studying and I am already doing all of this! My Italian language partners continue to compliment my level of speaking and my passion for such a short time studying. I write sentences and voice messages on WhatsApp when I cannot be on Skype. Un abbraccio!

I am a certified English teacher to speakers of other languages, and a bilingual person who has learned a 3rd language, and now learning Italian (after one year of class at the university). I totally agree because I am making some of these mistakes in learning Italian now!

I'm brazilian and I use your channel as one of my italian refereneces on learnng. I'm learning italian and japanese. I'm glad to know that you also study portuguese and japanese. But, in my modest opinion, maybe you are a little bit wrong about japanese. I completly agree with you to not focus only on grammar. BUT, it only works for linguages that are similar, as italian, english, spanish and portuguese. This linguages in most cases are "one by one". An by it I mean if you want to say something in your linaguge in that another one there is a perfect conterpart in. In asian linguages there's so much difference that this one by one are the EXCEPTION. Of coruse if you ask me, for example: how do I say dog? I say: is inu. How do I say cat? I say: is neko. BUT, ofr example, if you ask me: how do I say "this is not red"? I would have to say: Have you time? Sit here please. Because I'd take a little time to explain the grammar behind this. Because in japanese you CONJUGATE adjectives. You put adjectives in the negative form or the past form. Unfortunately, in asian linguages as japanese and corean we have an exception: you will HAVE to spend a lot of time in grmmar an kanji beacause, otherwise another similar linguages (as latin linguages), you CAN NOT aprehend it just by context. It's a too different way to construct a phrase.

And about kanjis: Also unfortunately you will have to expend a lot of time of your study in kanji learning, beacause kanji is "your japanese dictionary" to know new words. If you don't know how to read kanji you don't know how to read a word. Of course someone who DO'NT do that, in a SHORT period will be more eficcient in communicate than someone who do. BUT in a LONG term that person will NOT be able to grasp anything in japanese anymore. And then he has to GO BACK and do all the boreing grammar and kanji stuff. In the beggining you certainly FEEL that would be faster if you concentrate and just learn phrases. But it is JUST IN THE LOWER LEVELS. As the level grows you'll get stucked and have to come back to actual grammar. In a long term a person stucked with this things in the beggining will be able to learn MUCH more japanese. Understand? Unfortunately learn japanese is a long term project different form other similar linguages with more similar structure than your native linguage. I really do exactly what you recomend for italian. But it's becauese italian an prtuguese are both latin linguages with very similar structure, so you can get most of the things by context. Japanese has a tottaly different estructure to construct a sentence. And it gets MORE differnt as your level progress. So we have to do some more grammar than when learning a much similar linguage. The good news is that more grammar you know more grammar you will be able to grasp by context. But in the first years? You will have to do almost just grammar, kanji and vocabulary stuff (and it gets harder and harder and more different than your native linguage as it progresses).

Can you recommend a book or workbook on studying verbs and conjugating verbs. I found this to be very helpful when I took Italian in college.
