So not only are they worse in the sense that they dissolve in 3-5 minutes, but they’re also worse for environmental reasons. The irony.

I am old enough to remember when we got 100% biodegradable papers bags at the grocery store, and turned some of them into bookcovers for school. We also had 100% biodegradable glass bottles for our sodas, milk, and other beverages. Then, liberals rescued us from that way of life and now everything is plastic that we pretend to recycle.

They eliminated the plastic straw and give you your drink in a plastic cup with a paper straw. This is true genius!

The original paper straws were wax coated and the wax prevented them from tasting like cardboard. What's even funnier is we were told we that we don't have enough trees so we need to stop using paper products and then they tell us we have to use paper products to save the environment. Its clear that they cannot get their recommendations right because they don't understand the nuances of the environment.

I remember in the 70s we had paper bags & wax covered paper straws. Then the green activists pushed for us to switch to reusable plastic bags to save the trees from being cut down to make the paper…

Fun fact: Starbucks strawless lids actually contain more plastic than the old lids and straws combined. Also, when I worked at Starbucks at Target, our manager would throw away cups that were not sold. That same manager had a bumper sticker that said “Save Our Oceans.” 😂😂

I remember my environmental science teacher facepalming because he saw paper straws that advertised they were better for the environment than plastic straws, but they came individually wrapped in plastic.

Every time I look at the bottled water aisle in the supermarket I just shake my head. We banned straws, that take up one foot of one shelf in one aisle. Meanwhile there is a whole aisle made up of bottled water (plastic) and another made up of Coke and Pepsi, etc.

Mind boggling!!! The stupid - it hurts!

Paper straws are a method of torture used to annoy the person trying to drink from them.

My biggest gripes: (1) Why are they pushing paper straws so hard while we're still drinking from plastic cups?? And (2) the more virtuous they sound, the more they're trying to kill us. I mean, look at the last 3 years...

I was at a super snooty "Sprouts" grocery store the other day where they will gladly shame you for not using reusable cloth grocery bags. Meanwhile 99% of the food in the store is sold in single use plastic packaging. Just so ridiculous. For the record I have nothing against reusable cloth grocery bags, I just resent the guilt trip, the snobbery, and the hypocrisy.

Too bad it’s really unlikely that the decision to use paper straws ever gets reverted, cause that requires certain people to admit they made a wrong decision, and people are not good at admitting those things…

Many of my extended family members are hardcore progressives and never use the plastic straws given to them at restaurants. I had no idea that the entire anti-plastic straw movement was started by a bunch of 9 year olds.

I bought dinner to go from a restaurant one night. As I waited for my food, I read a sign telling all about how they were straw free and why. They were very proud of this decision. When I got my meal, it was in a large plastic bag. Inside the plastic bag were two plastic containers. Also included was a plastic package with a plastic fork and knife. I couldn't help but laugh.

We've gone from reusable plastic straws that were wrapped in paper tissue to dissolvable paper straws wrapped in plastic😅

Last year, I decided to fix up a bicycle that had been sitting outside for a couple of years, so that I could start riding it again. I looked at the plastic grip shifter and it had a crack in it. I tried to see if it would still work...and the plastic just crumbled into pieces and dust in my hands. Some of the other plastic parts were in the same condition. I was kind of bummed. I was kind of counting on the plastic not disintegrating for another 500, 000 years...you know...like they always tell us. So that plastic grip shift that I was planning to use for at least 500 years, disintegrated into dust after just a couple years. I guess they're talking about a different kind of plastic. But that 10-year-old kid literally promised (at 2:30 ) that "every piece of plastic will be here even when his grandchildren are born" and "long after that". Well, I guess that's sort of true, especially if by "every piece" you mean the atoms and maybe some molecules. But I'm sure the plastic straws are the bad kind of plastic and they'll still be around when our sun super novas and the turtles on Pluto and Uranus will have to deal with them.

A wise man once said blaming plastic straws for environmental issues was like blaming deforestation on toothpicks, makes a lot of sense tbh

Remember when you see a young child being propelled to this level of importance, it is guaranteed thst there is an adult or group of adults behind them who dont want to show their faces.

Remember all those years ago when paper grocery bags were replaced with plastic ones to save trees?

My last time through the Starbucks drive-through, the lady handed me two paper straws, and I looked at her and questioned it. She said “well, they dissolve so fast that you will need to to finish the drink”, then I said well, it kind of defeats the purpose doesn’t it, now I’m throwing away two straws instead of having one that I could possibly reuse again she nodded in agreement.
