Yoooo Happy Thursday! Fall is here and I’m loving it but I have to ask, am I wrong for not wanting these things in the Netherlands?

Leiden University dates back to 1575. It's 201 years older than the USA.

That Olive Garden is not part of the Olive Garden chain in the USA. The Olive Garden in Leiden is a really REALLY good Italian restaurant, absolute recommendation for fine dining.

Thank for explaining about the Netherlands 🇳🇱 Americans often don’t believe how much further we are here in technology. I visited America every year for a roadtrip. Have a koffie on me. Keep up the great work ❤❤❤

This is why when my neighbor who I secretly call Cuban Karen goes on a rant about how Europe is socialist and you guys pay 30% taxes, I’m like, yeah but all their sh**t works. Honestly, if you think about it, in the end of the day, I think we end up paying more and nothing to show for it. At least you guys do! Cheers from Tampa, Florida ❤

We already have a type of Costco here, it’s called Makro. The biggest difference is that you need to have a company/chamber of commerce number to apply for a card.

The most underrated problem of a car oriented country is the problem of sound pollution. Cars driving every where you go in large numbers 24/7. it really takes a huge bite of your mentall health, even without you realising it. You just cannot completely relax in such a noisy surrounding, even if being used to it. And the Dutch recognized that problem in time, and therefor made most cities with car low or even car free areas. Specially in the town centres, where most of the historical buildings, cafes, restaurants, local markets and local shops are located. THANKS FOR THAT. I love it. Do not ever change that please.

What I want them to especially outlaw are American-sized pickup trucks. Someone in my neighborhood got one of those dodge ram monstrosities, and holy shit, I feel like a dwarf and I'm NOT a small person. I feel fortunate my head pops up over the hood, but I can't imagine how easily an accident will happen give that there are a couple of schools closeby. Worse still, they just park in regular parking spots, so the nose sticks out over the regular pedestrian sidewalk.
For as far I am concerned, vehicles of this volume need to be kept to the standards of big-ass commercial lorries: no parking in tony spots, a special driver license with far higher demands in order to be able to drive it, higher tax brackets and more of that shit. They inconvenience everyone in their surroundings, are bad for the climate and are an accident waiting to happen.

We have something like Costco here, it's called the Makro. You have to be registered at the KvK to get a membership card. All it prices are before BTW/VAT too.

Around 1780 two former American presidents lived in Leiden, John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams. The house is still there: adress: Langebrug 45. John Quincy studied at Leiden University.

You should take a tour outside of the Randstad, visit Zutphen for example, a beautifully very old Hanze stad.
Love your vids!

I would never shop at a Costco for so many reasons, some being:

1. Why would I pay to be allowed to shop for items I can buy in a sane supermarket/shop?!

2. I’m not down to spend hours just trying to find what I’m looking for in a hellscape box. IKEA is bad enough for me, and they have signage EVERYWHERE.

3. Where am I going to put all the sh*t I’m supposed to haul home with me?

4. What if I just want that one bag of crisps? Im not going to go to that much effort.

5. Why buy in bulk at all? There are at least three supermarkets at easy cycling distance from my house, one at a two minute walk. And I live in a village. That stuff is going to be way fresher than any bulk bought products.

6. What are all that packaging, hauling, and all those too cheap products doing to the environment? I’m not contributing to that.

Trust me, megastores like Costco will probably never get their licence for the Netherlands. And after the complete failure of Walmart in Germany, I don't think they'll dare to cross the pond. We do have our own mega store though (not as mega as Costco): Makro. But it's only for businesses.

3 October is 'Leidens Ontzet', it's a public holiday but only in Leiden itself, where they commemorate being liberated from the Spanish in 1574.

During the Eighty Years War (1568-1648), Spanish forces besieged Leiden twice, the 2nd time was in May 1574, by 3 October the city was liberated. The relief fleet brought herring and white bread for the starving population, and they found 'hutspot' in the Spanish camp; a stew of beef, carrots, and onions. The relief of Leiden has been celebrated yearly ever since. Its oldest parts, the free distribution of herring and white bread and a memorial service in the Pieterskerk, date to the very first 3 October, 1574. These days you can get free herring, white bread, and hutspot on every street corner in Leiden on 3 October.

It's a great festival, I used to celebrate it when I was a student at Leiden University, you should go!
