Battle of the Rosebud, Episode 2

In episode 2, General Crook halts along the Rosebud after his Crow and Shoshone scouts discover Sioux war parties to the north. However, General Crook get the post-Civil War surprise of his life as the Sioux and Cheyenne warriors descend on his camp.

The Army and native auxiliaries stabilize the situation until Crook divides his force. What ensues is bloody and chaotic fighting and we will see that in Episode 3.

This is an interesting battle to study, which took place just a week before the Battle of the Little Bighorn

Very well done! Your descriptions, maps and actually battlefield walks help me understand the battles as if I were there. I like the comparison you make between yourself and CPT Marcus Reno IRT libations. :)

I grew up near the old Fort Custer. In 1967, at 12 years of age, my friend and I discovered the garbage dump from the fort in a coulee to the East.
We had previously located the rifle range and collected many cartridges, slugs and even some live rounds. The dump was a treasure trove of old boot pieces, uniform shreds, bottles, dinner ware, many uniform buttons, and on rare occasion, a "US" Belt Buckle. The "US" Buckle was the most sought after treasure. We filled a few cardboard boxes of "loot" that Summer. We were family friends with the landowners so had an open invitation to go up whenever we wished. Sadly, when the road up the bluff was improved in the 70's, the dump site was buried in a "fill" location for the new road alignment.

This is the best documentary on the Battle of the Rosebud I have seen! Your use of satellite images of the battlefield overlayed with images of company positions complete with company officer names make the complex battle more understandable. I appreciate the addition of ground level topography pictures that compliment the satellite images and narration.

Thanks for taking us there, Sir. Appreciate it.

I’m reading about all these battles for school now.

Respectfully,

A. Canady,

USN Ret.

The same here. You can read 10 books on Waterloo, but only when you have boots on the ground you can understand the way the battle went and why.

This is the best video series I've ever seen on this subject! Your comprehensive and easy to follow narrative enabled me to see this in a way I never could before. I've read about this battle so so many times, but you took me there and helped me see. Thank you.

Great documentary. Realize communication was difficult but it seems like Custer by dispatch should have had knowledge of Crooks fight on the Rosebud with a large force of Warriors.

Great Job! I visited this battlefield alone around 1984, had the whole place to myself. To bad I hadn’t seen a very informative study like this one, I would have been better oriented about positions etc. Keep up the good work.

Seeing the actual terrain gives the viewer an idea of how clearly both warring sides could see what the other side was up to.

Excellent video! My family and I visited Rosebud Battlefield State Park in July 2023. We watched your video series on the battle before visiting the battlefield and it helped guide us to what we were seeing. The battlefield is huge and unlike Little Bighorn National Monument, there are few interpretive signs at Rosebud.

I just found you on You Tube, and I'm in "hog heaven". Your presentations and narratives are brilliant! The maps, the photos, and the occasional animations of old photos add such depth to the accounts. I will recommend you to some history buff friends of mine. I can't wait to see your series on the Battle of the Bulge.

Great job. I visited the battlefield around 1986. I had the whole place to myself. Quite an experience, it’s big and hasn’t changed much. Really enjoyed your presentation. Many Thanks.
